AUTHOR'S MESSAGE TO READERS. No matter what our perception is in relation to the subject of war and peace in our modern times, we have an inherent obligation to inculcate a spirit of lucidity and responsibility to reject erratic and ferment principles of politics that may jeopardize our determination to make our world a peaceful place. What is required is that we open up to the truth of the past and inculcate the good principles of politics into our contemporary culture of peace. The rethinking of ancient philosophy of peace is to reanimate us once again with the wisdom of the past in our search today for order and tranquility (tranquillitas ordinis). The philosophy of peace of the ancient times is not a monolith, for sure we can detect minor deficiencies and utopian elements in it, nevertheless its profundity and uniqueness offers those who study it something exceptional, distinctive, and pure, that has stood the test of time and all forms of cultural alterations over the centuries. Ancient philosophy has introduced us to the basic truth thus; peace is inner repose and outer harmony, and the person is at peace when he is not anguished inwardly by conflicting desires whilst living in harmony with others. Ancient philosophy affirms that men are intelligent and willing beings and are naturally called to build peace in their lives and in the society, this is true because any man who has examined history and human nature will agree with me that there is no such thing as a human heart that does not crave for peace and happiness. With a good modus operandi and determination we can build sound politics and social organization of peace, because peace is the only thing that can hold the human family together.

Warfare was an integral part of the operations of the medieval eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, both in its organization, as well as in social thinking and political ideology. The extended commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War have commenced in earnest. Over the next four years people around the world will struggle to avoid the politicised public narratives of these remembrances. Nationalistic sentiment is no less palpable today than imperial sentiment was a century ago. Its opponents are still there too. Among the countless commemorative activities that will occur, there are innumerable counter narratives. Although they are compelling in their telling of oppositional stories, they have yet to capture the imagination of the dominant storytellers of our generation. Mainstream media, governments, and politicians of all persuasions, remain a captive of “soft jingoism”, and the myth making of Geoffrey Serle’s “fire-eating generals”. In such a view, war remains a lamentable, but necessary evil. The true costs of war are absorbed only partially. Given the destabilisation of much of the globe, and the increasing militarisation of domestic politics by Western governments, it is unsurprising that a widespread movement for peace is momentarily lost. But history provides hope. By looking back we can see the ebb and flow of peace movements, and the lessons here are instructive. The present commemorative phase provides historians with a license to tell the stories that underscore the feeble fabric of nationalistic hubris – ones that seek to analyse and understand the human condition rather than simply commemorate it. Tales of national re-birth are but one facet of war, complicated by a much richer, dirtier, and more nuanced reality. This reality challenges the necessity of war, and allows us to empathise with war’s victims, elucidate oppositional tactics, and provide explanations for the difficulties in sustaining a pacifist approach in the midst of war. The chapters here deal with aspects of peace and anti-war, of memory, of forgetting, and of legacy. The majority – unsurprisingly, given the present historical moment – concentrate on the experience of the First World War. The shadows of that war are long, and the historiography they build on extensive. Hellenica is one of the most important primary sources for the History of the Peloponnesian War and the war's aftermath. Many consider this a very personal work, written by Xenophon in retirement on his Spartan estate, intended primarily for circulation among his friends, for people who knew the main protagonists and events, often because they had participated in them. It covers the events in Greece from 411 to 362 BC, and is considered to be the continuation of the History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides. Cyropaedia is a biography of Cyrus the Great, the founder of Achaemenid Empire and the first Persian Empire. It is "a political romance, describing the education of the ideal ruler, trained to rule as a benevolent despot over his admiring and willing subjects." Aspects of it would become a model for medieval writers of the genre known as mirrors for princes. In turn it was a strong influence upon the most well-known but atypical of these, Machiavelli's The Prince.
