BOOK EXCERPT:

Racing for Life Zack, in his undefeatable GT-R, faces off against Tak in a specially tuned Eight Six. But the hero of the Night Kids racing team may very well learn that agility’s worth more than muscle on Akina Mountain, and that focus is worth more than bombast. Now the racing scene in Gunma Prefecture begins to wonder if Tak can spin that same racing magic on a run other than Mount Akina, while Tak himself shows the nascent signs of a racing obsession—piling on work hours, drawing away from Natalie … perhaps longing for a car of his own, a dream being realized by mousy little Iggy, who’s in the market for a new car and may decide to buy a Levin to match Tak’s Trueno. And Cole’s car comes back from the shop after being totaled on the mountain. It looks like the Akina Speed Stars are shaping up. But racing for fun turns into racing for your life when Shingo arrives on the mountain and challenges Tak to a deathmatch.

A Treatise On Northern Ireland Volume Iii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The third volume of the definitive political history of Northern Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement deserved the attention the world gave it, even if it was not always accurately understood. After its ratification in two referendums, for the first time in history political institutions throughout the island of Ireland rested upon the freely given assent of majorities of all the peoples on the island. It marked, it was hoped, the full political decolonization of Ireland. Whether Ireland would reunify, or whether Northern Ireland remain in union with Great Britain now rested on the will of the people of Ireland, North and South respectively: a complex mode of power-sharing addressed the self-determination dispute. The concluding volume of Brendan O'Leary's A Treatise on Northern Ireland explains the making of this settlement, and the many failed initiatives that preceded it under British direct rule. Long-term structural and institutional changes and short-term political maneuvers are given their due in this lively but comprehensive assessment. The Anglo-Irish Agreement is identified as the political tipping point, itself partially the outcome of the hunger strikes of 1980-81 that had prevented the criminalization of republicanism. Until 2016 the prudent judgment seemed to be that the Good Friday Agreement had broadly worked, eventually enabling Sinn Féin and the DUP to share power, with intermittent attention from the sovereign governments. Cultural Catholics appeared content if not in love with the Union with Great Britain. But the decision to hold a referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union has collaterally damaged and destabilized the Good Friday Agreement. That, in turn, has shaped the UK's tortured exit negotiations with the European Union. In appraising these recent events and assessing possible futures, readers will find O'Leary's distinctive angle of vision clear, sharp, unsentimental, and unsparing of reputations, in keeping with the mastery of the historical panoramas displayed throughout this treatise.

Spatial Modelling And Failure Analysis Of Natural And Engineering Disasters Through Data Based Methods Volume Iii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This Research Topic is Volume III of a series. The previous volume can be found here: Spatial Modelling and Failure Analysis of Natural and Engineering Disasters through Data-based Methods - Volume II and Spatial Modelling and Failure Analysis of Natural and Engineering Disasters through Data-based Methods Natural and engineering disasters, which include landslides, rock fall, rainstorm, dam failure, floods, earthquakes, road and building disasters and wildfires, appear as results of the progressive or extreme evolution of climatic, tectonic and geomorphological processes and human engineering activities. It is significant to explore the failure mechanism and carry out spatial modeling of these engineering and natural disasters due to their serious harm to the safety of people's lives and property. The data-based methods, including advanced and successful remote sensing, geographic information systems, machine learning and numerical simulation techniques methods, are promising tools to analyze these complex disasters. Machine Learning models such as neurofuzzy logic, decision tree, artificial neural network, deep learning and evolutionary algorithms are characterized by their abilities to produce knowledge and discover hidden and unknown patterns and trends from large databases, whereas remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems appear as significant technology equipped with tools for data manipulation and advanced mathematical modeling. What is more, the numerical simulation can also be acknowledged as advanced technologies for discovering hidden failure mechanism of disasters. The main objective of this Research Topic is to provide a scientific forum for advancing the successful implementation of Machine Learning (ML) and numerical simulation techniques in operation rules, failure mechanism, spatial and time series prediction, susceptibility mapping, hazard assessment, vulnerability modeling, risk assessment and early warning of complex natural and engineering disasters.

The Digital Hand Vol 3

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In The third volume of The Digital Hand, James W. Cortada completes his sweeping survey of the effect of computers on American industry, turning finally to the public sector, and examining how computers have fundamentally changed the nature of work in government and education. This book goes far beyond generalizations about the Information Age to the specifics of how industries have functioned, now function, and will function in the years to come. Cortada combines detailed analysis with narrative history to provide a broad overview of computings and telecommunications role in the entire public sector, including federal, state, and local governments, and in K-12 and higher education. Beginning in 1950, when commercial applications of digital technology began to appear, Cortada examines the unique ways different public sector industries adopted new technologies, showcasing the manner in which their innovative applications influenced other industries, as well as the U.S. economy as a whole. He builds on the surveys presented in the first volume of the series, which examined sixteen manufacturing, process, transportation, wholesale and retail industries, and the second volume, which examined over a dozen financial, telecommunications, media, and entertainment industries. With this third volume, The Digital Hand trilogy is complete, and forms the most comprehensive and rigorously researched history of computing in business since 1950, providing a detailed picture of what the infrastructure of the Information Age really looks like and how we got there. Managers, historians, economists, and those working in the public sector will appreciate Cortada's analysis of digital technology's many roles and future possibilities.

Quantum Mechanics Volume 3

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This new, third volume of Cohen-Tannoudji's groundbreaking textbook covers advanced topics of quantum mechanics such as uncorrelated and correlated identical particles, the quantum theory of the electromagnetic field, absorption, emission and scattering of photons by atoms, and quantum entanglement. Written in a didactically unrivalled manner, the textbook explains the fundamental concepts in seven chapters which are elaborated in accompanying complements that provide more detailed discussions, examples and applications. * Completing the success story: the third and final volume of the quantum mechanics textbook written by 1997 Nobel laureate Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and his colleagues Bernard Diu and Franck Laloë * As easily comprehensible as possible: all steps of the physical background and its mathematical representation are spelled out explicitly * Comprehensive: in addition to the fundamentals themselves, the books comes with a wealth of elaborately explained examples and applications Claude Cohen-Tannoudji was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris where he also studied and received his PhD in 1962. In 1973 he became Professor of atomic and molecular physics at the Collège des France. His main research interests were optical pumping, quantum optics and atom-photon interactions. In 1997, Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, together with Steven Chu and William D. Phillips, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms. Bernard Diu was Professor at the Denis Diderot University (Paris VII). He was engaged in research at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and High Energy where his focus was on strong interactions physics and statistical mechanics. Franck Laloë was a researcher at the Kastler-Brossel laboratory of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
