This volume investigates the applications of the Circular Economy (CE) model in addressing the burgeoning issue of waste. Today, it has become imperative to understand the problem of environmental pollution from a value chain perspective. This calls for the coupling of the knowledge bases of science and management to achieve practical solutions to environmental problems and transition to a low carbon economy. With this thought process, this book merges various concepts from the techno-managerial perspective for effective waste management solutions. It throws light on the system-oriented view of CE and the contributions explore such concepts as the managerial aspect of waste management and CE, as well as advances in technical detailing.

The first edition described the concept of Integrated Waste Management (IWM), and the use of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) to provide a way to assess the environmental and economic performance of solid waste systems. Actual examples of IWM systems and published accounts of LCI models for solid waste are now appearing in the literature. To draw out the lessons learned from these experiences a significant part of this 2nd edition focuses on case studies - both of IWM systems, and of where LCI has been used to assess such systems. The 2nd edition also includes updated chapters on waste generation, waste collection, central sorting, biological treatment, thermal treatment, landfill and materials recycling. This 2nd edition also provides a more user-friendly model (IWM-2) for waste managers. To make it more widely accessible, this edition provides the new tool in Windows format, with greatly improved input and output features, and the ability to compare different scenarios. A detailed user's guide is provided, to take the reader through the use of the IWM-2 model, step by step. IWM-2 is designed to be an "entry level" LCI model for solid waste - user-friendly and appropriate to users starting to apply life cycle thinking to waste systems - while more expert users will also find many of the advanced features of the IWM-2 model helpful. IWM-2 is delivered on CD inside the book.

Since the 1992 World Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the waste management industry has made significant technological and managerial contributions to the protection of the environment. This document summarizes contributions from a number of International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) national members. It clearly shows the significant change of the role of waste management from dealing with wastes to the new task of managing our society's metabolism.

This book addresses multiple focus areas identified and provides solutions with respect to the circular economy, water pollution, potable water availability, reducing population impact on the environment, and better health by integrated waste management. It explains techniques to handle waste generation, characterization, minimization, collection, separation, treatment, and disposal, and includes chapters that address waste management policy, education, and economic and environmental assessments. Features: Introduces waste management, pollution, and toxicity profile of potentially toxic environmental contaminants and industrial wastes. Describes field studies on the application of microbes and plants in bio/phytoremediation of environmental contaminants/industrial wastes. Reviews eco-friendly remediation techniques such as phytoremediation, vermi-remediation, nano-remediation, and myco-remediation. Presents recent advances and challenges in bioremediation research and applications in environmental management. Details underlying tools and techniques for sustainable waste management and (nature-based) solutions in each chapter. This book is aimed at graduate students and researchers in environmental engineering and waste management.

This book offers a systematic literature review and a set of empirical studies on supply chain integration. Supply chain management is recognized as an essential means for firms to achieve competitive advantages, in which supply chain integration is regarded as the core for operational excellence: shorter lead time, lower inventory, faster delivery, and higher product and service quality. Using data from an international survey of manufacturing firms, an interrelated set of studies that investigate supply chain integration from different perspectives at multiple levels are conducted. Intra-organizational factors such as products, production systems, and socio-technical systems are examined to understand their effects on supply chain integration, indicating that firms need to implement different types of supply chain integration for specific competitive priorities. Then, the outcomes of supply chain integration, including its impact on risk management and sustainability management, are investigated from an inter-organizational perspective. The firm is embedded in a manufacturing network, a global supply chain, or both, and it can use supply chain integration as a strategic action for risks. Sustainability has been a vital issue for manufacturers, and supply chain integration can enhance its success. This book makes significant contributions to the relevant literature on supply chain integration and offers insights to supply chain managers in manufacturing industries.
