They not only employ cinematics, embedded books, and in-world television screens for various purposes, but, in our convergence culture, video games also play a vital role in allowing players to explore transmedia storyworlds. At the same time, video games are frequently thematized and remediated in film, television, and literature. Indeed, the central role video games assume in intermedial networks provides testament to their significance in the contemporary media environment. In this volume, an international group of contributors discuss not only intermedial phenomena in video games, but also the intermedial networks surrounding them. Intermedia Games-Games Inter Media will deepen readers' understanding of the convergence culture of the early twenty-first century and video games' role in it.

This interdisciplinary volume explores, analyzes, and celebrates intermedial processes. It investigates the dynamic relations between media in contemporary artistic productions such as digitalized poetry and installations or musical scores by Walter Steffens and Hugh Davies; in texts like Dieter Roth’s diaries, Ror Wolf’s guidebooks, Charles Baudelaire’s art criticism, or Lewis Carroll’s Alice books; and in inherently intermedial pieces like Stéphane Mallarmé’s Un Coup de Dés and Augusto de Campos’s poetry. Through distinct and diverse methodological approaches to intermedial inquiry, the contributors probe multiple forms of interaction between media: adaptation, appropriation, transposition, transfer, recycling, grafting, recontextualization, intertextualization, transmedialization, and transcreation. In so doing, they offer perspectives which refine our understanding of the term ‘medium’ and demonstrate ways in which intermedial creations engage their audiences and stimulate creative responses. Written in honor of Claus Clüver, a groundbreaking leader in intermediality studies, the essays participate in and broaden the scope of current discourses in the international forum. The range of their subjects and methodologies will interest literary scholars, art historians, musicologists, scholars of new media as well as those working in intermediality studies, word and image or word and music studies, and anyone whose interests cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.

The National Center for Intermedia Transport Research (NCITR) was established at UCLA in 1982 by EPA as one of six Centers of Excellence for the study of environmental pollution problems. One of the functions undertaken by the NCITR has been to hold periodic workshops and to provide a forum for the discussion of current topiCS in the environmental pollution arena. To this end, two other workshops have previously been held. The first, held in November 1982, was chaired by H. R. Pruppacher, R. G. Semonin and W. G. N. Slinn on Precipitation Scavenging, Dry DepOSition and Resuspension. The second, held in January 1986, was chaired by Y. Cohen on Pollution Transport and Accumulation in a Multimedia Environment. The present workshop, chaired by D. T. Allen, Y. Cohen and I. R. Kaplan, was held on August 24-26, 1988 in Santa Monica, California. The title of the workshop was Intermedia Pollutant Transport: Modeling and Field Measurements. Approximately one hundred individuals participated and twenty five papers were given, mostly by invitation. The workshop was divided into the following four broad topiCS: 1) Transport of Pollutants from the Atmosphere, 2) Transport of Pollutants from Soils and Groundwaters, 3) Transport of Pollutants from Lakes and Oceans, and 4) Multimedia Transport of Pollutants. The last afternoon was reserved for a Panel Discussion.

The emergence of new media today in South Asia has signalled an event, the meaning of which remains obscure but whose reality is rapidly evolving along gradients of intensity and experience. Contemporary media in and from South Asia have come to sense a new arrangement of value, sensation, and force - new forms of becoming that might be usefully termed as 'media ecologies'. This evolution from nation-based forms of communication (Doordarshan, All India Radio, the "national" feudal romance) to simultaneous global ones conform and mutate the structures of feeling of local, national, diasporic and transnational belonging. This collection of original essays is concerned with understanding how people are making meaning from the new media and how subaltern tinkering (pirating, peer to peer file sharing, hacking, noise jamming, indymedia, etc.) does things to and in the new media. This exciting works helps us to make sense of the creation of new publics, new affects and new experiences of pleasure and value in convergences of intermedia in a fast developing South Asia context. This book was originally published as a special issue of South Asian Popular Culture.
