Macroeconomics has undergone profound changes since the Keynesian consensus broke down in the mid-60s. Axel Leijonhufvud belonged to that core group of distinguished macroeconomists who wrought the changes that brought back the classical questions to the subject: microfoundations, money, markets, institutions, information, transition dynamics and much else. He fashioned a whole series of conceptual innovations that have become part of the folklore of monetary macroeconomics. In this collection of essays distinguished colleagues and former students pay homage to this gentle intellectual giant. Issues that have featured at the centre of Axel Leijonhufvud's research for over 30 years are discussed by the contributors. History of thought, philosophy of science and transition dynamics in addition to the more central issues of money, inflation, monetary regimes, information, institutions, microfoundations, increasing returns and stabilizing speculation are some of the central topics discussed, empirically and theoretically, in these essays.

This paper focuses on the corporate governance arrangements of institutions offering Islamic financial services (IIFS) aimed at protecting stakeholders' financial interests. Many IIFS corporate governance issues are common with those of their conventional counterparts. Others are distinctive. In particular they offer unrestricted investment accounts that share risks with shareholders but without a voting right. This paper first reviews internal and external arrangements put in place by IIFS to protect stakeholders' financial interests. It discusses shortcomings notably in terms of potential conflict of interest between shareholders and holders of unrestricted investment accounts. It then suggests a corporate governance framework that combines internal and external arrangements to provide safeguards to unrestricted investment account holders without overburdening IIFS' financial performance. The paper uses a review of 13 IIFS and regulatory information from countries where IIFS have developed the most.

Can international institutions help create more cooperative and peaceful relations between states? If so, how? And what motivates states to create meaningful institutions in the first place? Though theorists and researchers have approached these questions from different schools of thought, the commonality among them is that institutions are apolitical and their purpose is to assure common gains or develop shared social norms and identities. Institutions succeed if they rise above petty power politics and fail when they succumb to political confrontations. In this book, Erik Voeten offers a new broader understanding of international institutions. Current theories offer conflicting portraits of why IOs form, why the succeed (or not) and their role in current politics. While international institutions can enhance the welfare of participants, they are simultaneously the structural means through which actors try to get what they want, often at the expense of others. Voeten argues that these distributive politics shape institutions and, in turn, institutions shape the conduct of such politics. The book will largely be theoretical, as its purpose is to illustrate an alternative way of understanding institutions rather than to test a specific hypothesis. After developing what the distributive theory of international institutions is, Voeten examines how this theory bears on other understandings of international institutions on a variety of scholarly perspectives, drawing on the extensive work in this area
