With the advent of the new imperialism in the late 19th century, one after another Muslim country was officially either colonised or came under the influence of the major Western powers. This had a far-reaching impact on the Muslim world. It altered the political geography and replaced or transformed the indigenous politics, social, education and economic systems of the colonised countries. Unfortunately, even after the Muslim countries achieved independence, they continued to be influenced by the Western systems legally, socially and educationally. In the sphere of education, liberation from imperialism often did not entail the creation of higher education based on indigenous tradition and values.To make matters worse, most of the secular leaders in the Muslim countries continued to borrow the Western models of higher education uncritically. This book brings together a collection of chapters on higher education in Muslim countries. Topics range from the philosophical and structural dimensions of higher education, reform of higher education, present achievements and gaps in the level of education and scientific research in Muslim countries, as well as ranking institutions ofhigher education. All seven chapters present useful insights on various issues of higher education in Muslim countries. Discussions from the chapters examine the current trends adopted by most Muslim countries and challenge readers to critically consider the coexistence of material and spiritual values in higher education, particularly from the Islamic perspectives. Equipped with such information, policy makers, researchers, university leaders and students can be better prepared to comprehend the major trends in higher education in Muslim countries.

Islamization and Activism in Malaysia examines aspects of the increasing political and social profile of Islam in Malaysia and describes how different kinds of activists in Malaysia have sought to protect fundamental liberties and to improve the state of democracy in Malaysia. In particular, focus is paid to activists who engage with electoral process, the law and the public sphere, and in particular, to movements that cut across or combine these realms of action. International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is pleased to bring out Journey to Islamicisation of Human Knowledge: A Festschrift in Honour of Mohd. Kamal Hassan. The publication of this festschrift – first of its kind by IIUM Press – marks a tribute to the late Emeritus Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd. Kamal Hassan (1942-2023) and a recognition of his many contributions to the university. He served IIUM and its community – both formally and informally – in various capacities including being its third Rector. His attachment to IIUM spanned a long period from its inception in 1983 to the end of his active life. I hope this festschrift will help readers appreciate Kamal Hassan’s contributions and will encourage more scholarly work on his legacy. It will increase their interest in his ideas as well as in the mission and philosophy of IIUM. I congratulate the editors of and the contributors to this book for their inspired efforts to prepare its content, and IIUM Press for publishing this significant work.

The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) is the most interesting phenomenon in contemporary Indonesian politics. Not only is it growing rapidly in membership and electoral support, it is also bringing a new and markedly different approach to Islamic politics, one which has no precedent in Indonesian history. Understanding PKS and analysing its political behaviour presents challenges to scholars and observers. This is partly due to the fact that the party represents a new trend within Indonesian Islam which has few parallels with preceding movements. Yon Machmudi has rendered us a valuable service. In this book, he provides a thoughtful and authoritative context for viewing PKS. He critiques the existing categorisations for Indonesian Islam and points to their inadequacy when describing the PKS and the campus-based Tarbiyah movement from which it sprang. He reworks the santri typology, dividing it into convergent, radical and global substreams. This offers new possibilities for explaining the PKS phenomenon and assists in differentiating between various types of Islamic revivalism in contemporary Indonesia. It also allows a more understanding of the accommodatory stance which PKS has towards the state and other political forces. Yon's text provides a good overview of the development of PKS from its Tarbiyah movement origins to its impressive success at the 2004 general elections. It considers the party's attitude towards the issues of sharia implementation and community welfare and closes by examining the future challenges facing PKS. It is a well written and authoritative account from a scholar who has done wideranging research on the party.

Why is there a need to rethink madrasah education? What is the positioning of Muslims in contemporary society, and how are they prepared? What is the role of the ulama in the reform process?
