The first Colloquium in Syntax and Semantics in Paris (CSSP 95) was held Oct. 1995 and was organized by members of a research group in formal linguistics belonging to the CNRS.

The architecture of the human language faculty has been one of the main foci of the linguistic research of the last half century. This branch of linguistics, broadly known as Generative Grammar, is concerned with the formulation of explanatory formal accounts of linguistic phenomena with the ulterior goal of gaining insight into the properties of the 'language organ'. The series comprises high quality monographs and collected volumes that address such issues. The topics in this series range from phonology to semantics, from syntax to information structure, from mathematical linguistics to studies of the lexicon.

This volume brings together recent scholarship addressing a number of significant issues in linguistic theory and description, including verb classification, case marking, comparative constructions, noun phrase structure, clause linkage and reference-tracking in discourse. These topics are discussed with respect to a wide range of languages, including Bamunka (Bantu), Biblical Hebrew, Japanese, Persian, Pitjantjatjara (Australia), Russian and Taiwan Sign Language. The theoretical perspective employed in these analyses is that of Role and Reference Grammar (RRG), a theory which strives to describe language structure and grammatical phenomena in terms of the interaction of syntax, semantics and discourse-pragmatics. RRG differs from other parallel-architecture, constructionally-oriented theories in important ways, particularly with respect to the ability to formulate cross-linguistic generalizations. The ability of RRG to facilitate the formulation of cross-linguistic generalizations is exemplified well in the contributions to this volume. As such, this text makes important theoretical and descriptive contributions to contemporary linguistic discussions.

At a superficial examination, English has different types of nominals with similar meaning and distribution: (1)a. John's performance ofthe song b. J ohn' s performing of the song c. John's performing the song d. the fact that John performs the song These nominals are also perceived by English speakers to be related to the same sentential construction: (2) John performs the song A more accurate inspection reveals, however, that the nominals in (1) differ both in their distribution and in the range of interpretations they allow. An adequate theory of nominalization should explicate rigorously how nominals of the types in (1) are related to sentential construction (2), and should also account for their distributional differences and meaning differences. The task of this book is to develop such a theory. I defend two main theses. The first is that, in order to provide an adequate semantics for the nominals in (1), one needs to distinguish among three types of entities in the domain of discourse (in addition to the type of ordinary individuals): events, propositions, and states xiii XIV PREFACE of affairs. I argue that the nominals in (1) differ in their ability to denote entities of these types and that predicates differ in their ability to select for them.

Issues in Slavic Syntax and Semantics is a collection of papers dealing with a range of syntactic and semantic phenomena across a variety of Slavic languages. The papers included in this volume were presented at the Graduate Colloquia on Slavic Linguistics held at the Ohio State University, reflecting cutting-edge research in Slavic Linguistics by a new generation of scholars from top American and European universities. Topics include the word order of noun phrases with classifying adjectives, the correlation between morphosyntactic realization and semantic roles of the nouns, semantics and syntax of subordinate imperative constructions, clausal structure and semantic properties of impersonal constructions, temporal properties of embedded subjunctive clauses, and the semantics of yes/no questions. The authors present the analyses of the studied phenomena within a variety of formal syntactic and semantic frameworks, such as the Minimalist program, semantics of events, and temporal semantics. These studies consider syntactic and semantic issues in Russian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, Slovenian, Old Church Slavonic, Polish, and Lithuanian. In addition, some of the papers also offer diachronic analyses of the studied phenomena. Issues in Slavic Syntax and Semantics definitely will interest linguists engaged in the formal study of natural language syntax and semantics and to Slavicists generally.

This 22-chapter text explores the structure of language and the meaning of words within a given structure. The text/workbook combination gives students both the theory and practice they need to understand this complex topic. Analyzing Syntax and Semantics features the Personalized System of Instruction (PSI) approach. This method uses student performance objectives, practice, feedback, individualization of pace, and repeatable testing as instructional strategies.

This collection of essays grew out of the workshop ‘Existence: Semantics and Syntax’, which was held at the University of Nancy 2 in September 2002. The workshop, organized by Ileana Comorovski and Claire Gardent, was supported by a grant from the Reseau ́ de Sciences Cognitives du Grand Est (‘Cognitive Science Network of the Greater East’), which is gratefully acknowledged.
