The Gift And Its Paradoxes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Bringing social theory and philosophy to bear on popular movies, novels, myths, and fairy tales, The Gift and its Paradoxes explores the ambiguity of the gift: it is at once both a relation and a thing, alienable and inalienable, present and poison. Challenging the nature of giving as reciprocal, the book engages critically with the work of Mauss and develops a new theory of the gift according to which the gift cannot be reduced to a model of exchange, but must instead entail a loss or sacrifice. Ultimately, the gift is examined in the book as the impossible occurrence of gratuitous giving. In addition to exploring the conditions of possibility and impossibility of the gift, the book draws on the thought of figures such as Derrida, Serres, Simmel, Cixous, Irigaray and Heidegger to argue for the relevance of the phenomenon of the gift to broader issues in contemporary social sciences. It takes up questions concerning the constitution of community and the processes by which people are included in or excluded from it, gender relations, materiality, the economy, and the possibility that death itself could be a gift, in the form of euthanasia or self-sacrifice. A rigorous yet accessible examination of the phenomenon of the gift in relation to a range of contemporary concerns, The Gift and its Paradoxes will appeal to scholars and students within sociology, philosophy, anthropology, political theory and film and literature studies.

It S Not About You It S About God

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It can hurt to hear someone tell it like it is. But sometimes you need to get the truth, straight up. And the truth is that it's not about you--it's about God. Maybe you have relied on your own strength for far too long. You haven't been able to count on other people, so you just do your own thing. But God has bigger plans for you. God wants to use you to change the world. Rebecca Osaigbovo, conference speaker and author of Chosen Vessels, shows how black women can stand up to Satan's lies and face tough problems, not in your own strength but by finding God's strength in the midst of your weaknesses. She says this to women who want to be the keys to change in their homes, churches and communities: "If you want things to be different, then stop going your own way and follow God's lead. Lean not on your own understanding, and he'll make your paths straight."

The Post To Come

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Typically, when utilised in the general terms of a post-metaphysics, the 'Post' is seen as unsympathetic to ethics. In contrast, this author proposes that the trajectory for a post-metaphysical ethics can be traced from the work of Martin Heidegger. Despite demonstrating that certain projects of the 'Post' have reached an impasse, she argues that other such possibilities do develop an outline for an ethical 'Post' that does not collapse into paradox or remain at an impasse, further suggesting that this vision of the 'Post' holds positive significance and implications for our conceptions of ethics and ethical practice in the 21st century. Drawing in detail on both Heidegger's oeuvre and a wide range of associated projects in contemporary continental philosophy, including phenomenology, deconstruction, pragmatism, the newer French liberalism and post-structuralist aesthetics and theology, this book delivers a convincing rebuttal of one of the more persistent arguments about post-Heideggerian philosophy and its relations to the ethical.

Toward A Politics Of The Im Possible

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book works at the intersection of two related yet different fields. One is the heterogeneous feminist effort to question universal forms of knowing. The second field follows from this conundrum: how does one think of the body when s/he speaks of embodiment? ‘Toward a Politics of the (Im)Possible’ engages the forefront of contemporary thought on the body, while remaining mindful of the requirements of a feminist approach.
