Longevity And Quality Of Life

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Nations around the world are experiencing a spectacular increase in longevity. Society as a whole is being challenged by issues arising from this revolution in longevity. Although the specter of the loneliness and existential suffering of older citizens is such that some people under the age of 65 find it difficult to conceive of a long-term future, persons over 85 have proven that aging does not necessarily preclude a healthy and productive life. Extraordinary progress in both curative and preventive medicine justifies optimism about the quality of life and state of well-being that can be enjoyed even in great old age. We should look to professionals in diverse fields to develop creative solutions to the inevitable issues that will arise with aging. Governments must prepare for the future health of their citizens by making long-term investments to educate all sectors of society in the value of good nutrition, exercise, and lifestyles that enhance well-being throughout life. Also, governments should realize that the main cause of health care expenditure is serious illness which occurs in persons of all ages, and not predominantly in older people. Early detection can help save lives, as well. Health and longevity of life will ultimately end as a political issue. What is needed is long-term government investments necessary for a viable health policy. The question arises: will world leaders be able to commit to such a policy? Two major socioeconomic phenomena may have a regulating effect on this issue. The first is the emergence of pressure groups that have come into being in response to a particular health issue, such as AIDS. The second is the emergence of ethics committees in developed nations that deal solely with health issues.

The Longevity Revolution

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Pulitzer-prize winning author Dr. Robert Butler coined the term "ageism" and made "Alzheimer's" a familiar word. Now he brings his formidable knowledge and experience in aging issues to a recent and unprecedented achievement: the extension of human life expectancy by thirty years. As Butler shows, our society had not yet adapted to this change. The U.S. has not made a research investment in aging. Only eleven medical schools out of 145 have geriatrics departments compared to England where geriatrics is the number two specialty. We have not solidified private pension plans or strengthened Social Security to ensure that people do not outlive their resources. In this urgent and ultimately optimistic book, Dr. Butler shows why and how we must re-examine our personal and societal approach to aging right now, so that the boomers and the generations that follow may have a financially secure, vigorous, and healthy final chapter life.

Summary Of Outlive The Science And Art Of Longevity

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Outlive - The Science and Art of Longevity by Peter Attia - A Comprehensive Summary The term "longevity" refers to the length of a person's life, which has recently gained increased attention and interest. Throughout history, people and societies have sought to live longer and healthier lives. The past century has seen significant advancements in science, medicine, and technology, leading to higher life expectancies, with many people now reaching their 80s, 90s, and even 100s. However, just living longer is not enough. It is important to ensure that those extra years are healthy, disease-free, and fulfilling. This concept is known as "healthy longevity," which has become a growing area of research in public health and healthcare. Why is Longevity Important? Prolonging life can improve the quality of life, reduce healthcare costs, and promote economic and social well-being. By promoting healthy longevity, people can live longer and more productive lives, contributing to society and their communities. It can also help families and healthcare systems deal with the effects of age-related illnesses such as dementia, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, longer lifespans have significant economic implications. Social security and healthcare systems may face increased pressure as the population ages, and there may be a shortage of labor. By enabling people to continue functioning as productive members of society for longer periods, promoting healthy longevity can help mitigate these challenges. Longevity also has a substantial impact on relationships with friends and family. By living longer and healthier lives, people have the opportunity to spend more time with loved ones and develop deeper connections, which can lead to more social support, reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation, and improved mental health. In addition to individual decisions and actions, access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities are part of the broader social context that affects longevity. To promote healthy aging for everyone, it is crucial to address these social factors that impact health. It is essential to stay informed on the latest research and evidence-based strategies as our understanding of the science of longevity evolves. By working together, individuals, healthcare professionals, and policymakers can help ensure that people can live longer, better, and more fulfilling lives through the promotion of healthy longevity. The Longevity Factor

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuroscientist and surgeon Joseph Maroon looks at recent scientific breakthroughs identifying a group of natural substances--including the much-publicized molecule resveratrol--that can actually activate a specific set of genes that promote a longer, healthier life. These substances, which make red wine, dark chocolate, and green tea good for us, appear to stave off a wide array of age-related diseases and keep us feeling young and vital. Only recently have scientists discovered how to isolate resveratrol and concentrate it into an affordable and safe supplement. Already, more than 200 supplements featuring resveratrol have flooded the market, and there are more on the way. What is a consumer to look for? Since resveratrol is a natural substance, can you get enough of it through diet alone, or should you combine diet with a supplement? And what lies on the horizon from the pharmaceutical industry? These questions and many more are answered here. --From publisher description.

The Longevity Imperative

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From a leading expert on longevity, an urgent call for individuals, institutions, and society to adapt to the reality of living longer lives Thanks to increases in life expectancy, we can now expect to live for a long time. Most of us would welcome an extra day in the week, so why do so many of us view the prospect of additional years with fear and skepticism? The reason is simple: society is not currently structured to support long lives. Rather than thinking in terms of the needs of a rising number of older people, we must instead support the young and middle-aged to prepare differently for the longer futures they can expect. The Longevity Imperative outlines the innovations needed to make the most of these longer lives: substantial changes to our health system, economy, and financial sector, as well as in how we manage our careers, health, finances, and relationships. Instead of seeing longevity as a problem, economist Andrew J. Scott challenges us to view it as an opportunity. This book charts a course to address the individual, social, political, economic, and cultural changes required so that all of us—regardless of age—can live lives that are not just longer but healthier, happier, and more productive.
