This conference proceedings of the second "Round Table on Capital Market Reforms in Asia" held in Tokyo in April 2000, which was organised by the OECD and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI), focused on bond market development in Asia.

This book is a theoretical and empirical analysis of institutional foundation of long-term economic growth from the perspective of state-market and central-local relations. The book argues that, in order to safeguard sustainable market development, it is necessary to centralize certain functions of the state to overcome local predatory governmental rulings, and to decentralize others to increase local governmental market incentives, simultaneously. This institutional approach is conceptualized as “Dual Intergovernmental Transformation for Market Development” (DITMD). This book develops the DITMD model through an in-depth empirical comparison on contemporary China and the 19th-century United States.

The book, the first time, critically evaluates the evolution of both equity and securities markets in transition economies.

This book deals with several facets of China's economic growth and its rising income inequality. It provides evidence on China's social and economic inequalities and their causes.

In traditional bond markets, sovereign bonds provide benchmarks and serve as catalysts for the corporate bond market development. Contrary to the usual sequence of bond market development, sovereign issuers are latecomers to sustainable bond markets. Yet, our empirical study finds that sovereign green bond issuance can have quantitative and qualitative benefits for the development of private sustainable bond markets. Our results suggest that both the number and the size of corporate green bond issuance increase more in a jurisdiction after the sovereign debut. The results are more pronounced in countries with stronger climate policies. Sovereign green bond issuance also improves the quality of green verification standards in the corporate bond market more generally, consistent with the aim of fostering third-party reviews and promoting best practice in green reporting and verification. Finally, our work provides evidence that the sovereign debut increases liquidity and diminishes yield spreads of corporate green bonds in the same jurisdiction.

Private pension funds are neither necessary nor sufficient for capital market development. But if they are subject to conducive regulations, adopt optimizing policies, and operate in a pluralistic structure, they can have a large impact on capital market modernization and development once they reach a critical mass.

The Belt and Road initiative is marketed by the Chinese government as the "twenty-first century maritime Silk Road and the "Silk Road economic belt. The initiative encourages policy coordination, trade facilitation, financial integration, and transport connectivity. The Belt and Road initiative covers at least 65 countries across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, involving 70% of the global population, 75% of world energy reserves and 55% of world GNP. Such an initiative is expected to bring significant impacts to the transport and logistics industry in the regions involved. The transport and logistics sector not only directly contributes to the production of transport and logistics services, but also provides essential inputs to other sectors such as tourism, trade, infrastructure investment and management. Therefore, it is important to jointly analyse the implications of the Belt and Road initiative to the transport and logistics sectors, the best strategies and operation practices that the industry can pursue, and the right government policies that should be implemented in relation to the initiative.
