The Conference on "Mathematics and the 21st Century" was held in Cairo, Egypt during the period 15-20 January 2000. The conference's sessions consisted of plenary lectures and topical sessions. Some of the plenary lectures covered general fields such as: rewriting the history of mathematics; education of mathematics; relation between mathematics and sciences; and mathematical aspects of transportation.

This third edition of T eaching Mathematics for the 21st Century continues to help teachers let the secret out-to open up to their students the wonderful discoveries and challenges of the pattern-making and problem-solving aspects of a fascinating subject: mathematics. The rationale remains the same-to enable prospective and current teachers to access and use tools and strategies to effectively teach mathematics to contemporary students. Changing demographics, knowledge of how people learn, and technology all impact the way we educate our young people. This edition incorporates lessons and strategies from programs that have proven success in many types of classrooms. Many of these examples help students connect mathematics to real life situations and communicate their understanding of the underlying concepts. Although technology is constantly being upgraded, ways to increase student motivation through its application remains a goal. For example--since applets can enhance a lesson whether the teacher uses a computer projector, a "smart" board, or has students work individually on computers--we have identified several sources of mathematics applets that can be correlated to various lessons. Research citations and summaries have been updated to reflect current information on teaching and learning. For future teachers.

The exponentially increasing amounts of biological data along with comparable advances in computing power are making possible the construction of quantitative, predictive biological systems models. This development could revolutionize those biology-based fields of science. To assist this transformation, the U.S. Department of Energy asked the National Research Council to recommend mathematical research activities to enable more effective use of the large amounts of existing genomic information and the structural and functional genomic information being created. The resulting study is a broad, scientifically based view of the opportunities lying at the mathematical science and biology interface. The book provides a review of past successes, an examination of opportunities at the various levels of biological systemsâ€" from molecules to ecosystemsâ€"an analysis of cross-cutting themes, and a set of recommendations to advance the mathematics-biology connection that are applicable to all agencies funding research in this area.

The aim of this book is to contribute towards literature in the field of mathematics education, specifically the development of 21st century competencies amongst learners of mathematics.The book comprising fourteen chapters, written by renowned researchers in mathematics education, provides readers with approaches and applicable classroom strategies to foster skills and dispositions that will enable learners to thrive in the fast-changing and complex world that we live in today.The chapters in the book can be classified into three broad themes. The first is an examination of what is meant by 21st century competencies and how they can be developed within the context of the mathematics curriculum. The second is an in-depth discussion of evidence-based practices aimed at fostering specific competencies like metacognition and reflective thinking, critical thinking and communication skills. The last and third theme is about teaching approaches that are likely to feature increasingly in the 21st century classroom, for example flipped learning or the use of comics and storytelling.

This book intends to provide a comprehensive introduction to the status of development of Chinese mathematics education in the 21st century. To this end, the book summarizes and presents the research and practices of Chinese mathematics education in the following aspects: (1) characteristics of Chinese school mathematics curriculum and textbooks, (2) Chinese ways and strategies of teaching mathematics and the characteristics of mathematics classroom instruction in China, (3) Chinese instructional practices in developing (both gifted and underachieving) students’ mathematical capabilities, (4) how professional development of mathematics teachers is promoted in China, including mathematics teachers’ pre-service and in-service education, and how Chinese mathematics teachers design and implement teaching and research activities, and (5) how mathematics education is assessed and evaluated, including how to evaluate teachers’ teaching and students’ achievements. Relevant research in Chinese mathematics education involving methods of surveys, interviews, text analysis, etc., are reviewed and analyzed. Results of a number of video studies of Chinese mathematics classroom teaching and learning are also integrated into this book.

Interdisciplinarity has become increasingly important for emergent professions of the 21st century yet there is a dearth of systematic studies aimed at implementing it in the school and university curricula. The Mathematics and its Connections to the Arts and Sciences (MACAS ) group places Mathematics as a vehicle through which deep and meaningful connections can be forged with the Arts and the Sciences and as a means of promoting interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary thinking traits amongst students. The Third International Symposium held by the MACAS group in Moncton, Canada in 2009 included numerous initiatives and ideas for interdisciplinarity that are implementable in both the school and university setting. The chapters in this book cover interdisciplinary links with mathematics found in the domains of culture, art, aesthetics, music, cognition, history, philosophy, engineering, technology and science with contributors from Canada, U.S, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, Iran and Poland amongst others.

This open access book collects the historical and medial perspectives of a systematic and epistemological analysis of the complicated, multifaceted relationship between model and mathematics, ranging from, for example, the physical mathematical models of the 19th century to the simulation and digital modelling of the 21st century. The aim of this anthology is to showcase the status of the mathematical model between abstraction and realization, presentation and representation, what is modeled and what models. Over the years a number of "must read" articles and book chapters have appeared—work that has formed the foundational stepping stones of mathematics education research for the 21st century. Twelve such seminal articles have been reproduced in this book. His research interests are in dynamical systems modeling applied to biology, ecology, and epidemiology. Stephen Lovett is a Professor of Mathematics at Wheaton College in Illinois. He holds a PhD in representation theory from Northeastern University. His other books include Abstract Algebra: Structures and Applications (2015), Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces, with Tom Banchoff (2016), and Differential Geometry of Manifolds (2019).

Landscape of 21st Century Mathematics offers a detailed cross section of contemporary mathematics.
