This volume explores ideas of home, belonging and memory in migration through the social realities of leaving and living. Migration and forcible displacement are growing and impactful dynamics of the current global age. These processes generate mobility flows, travel patterns and touristic behaviour driven by personal and collective memories. The chapters in this book highlight the importance of travel and tourism for enabling such memories and memory-based identity practices to unfold. This Handbook is the first systematic effort to map the fast-growing phenomenon of memory activism and to delineate a new field of research that lies at the intersection of memory and social movement studies. From Charlottesville to Cape Town, from Santiago to Sydney, we have recently witnessed protesters demanding that symbols of racist or colonial pasts be dismantled and that we talk about histories that have long been silenced. But such events are only the most visible instances of grassroots efforts to influence the meaning of the past in the present. Made up of more than 80 chapters that encapsulate the rich diversity of scholarship and practice of memory activism by assembling different disciplinary traditions, methodological approaches, and empirical evidence from across the globe, this Handbook establishes important questions and their theoretical implications arising from the social, political, and economic reality of memory activism. Memory activism is multifaceted, takes place in a variety of settings, and has diverse outcomes – but it is always crucial to understanding the constitution and transformation of our societies, past and present. An extreme learning machine (ELM) is a single layer feed-forward neural network alike learning system, whose connections from the input layer to the hidden layer are randomly generated, while the connections from the hidden layer to the output layer are learned through linear learning methods. The outstanding merits of extreme learning machine (ELM) are its fast learning speed, trivial human intervene and high scalability. This book constitutes the strictly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on Languages, Compilers, and Run-Time Systems for Scalable Computing, LCR 2000, held in Rochester, NY, USA in May 2000. This volume pays tribute to Luisa Passerini, whose scholarship has had a major impact on feminist and other scholars around the world. First known internationally for developing new conceptual approaches to oral history and memory studies based on the recognition of the subjective nature of memory, Passerini has more recently written about autobiography, the history of emotions and concepts of belonging in Europe, and reimagining a more inclusive Europe. In this book, scholars from North America, South America and Europe engage Passerini’s groundbreaking insights into the nature of subjectivity, intersubjectivity, autobiography, and love in relation to the themes of borders, emotions, and memory. The contributions deal with topics including Mennonite refugee women's food memories; the testimonies of far-left Chilean women who survived brutal sexualized violence; and memories of the war between East and West Pakistan, and India and Pakistan. Other contributions to the volume situate and reflect on Passerini’s career-encompassing scholarship. Passerini speaks with the editors of her latest work on oral and visual memories of human movement, and also offers a thoughtful response to the essays, whose authors represent a transnational and multi-generational group of scholars. Joaquín Balaguer, Memory, and Diaspora draws on the growing interest in the legacies of authoritarianism and state violence and its interplay with migration and memory. Ana S. Q. Liberato discusses the relationship between memory and government pedagogy—or the meanings constructed and disseminated by Joaquín Balaguer in political ads and public speeches and through public policy and autobiographical work. Liberato argues that there is a revival of memory in the Dominican Republic today, including pro-Balaguer memorialization efforts, and that Balaguer’s political pedagogy had an effect on public memory. The influence of his political pedagogy on memory transpires in memorializations which reproduce notions of Balaguer's political and moral exceptionalism. This book shows that Balaguer’s authoritarian pedagogy has been consumed, anchored, and shared among different Dominican publics, in the island and overseas, through the prism he created. Liberato also reveals Balaguer as a contested political character who provokes particular emotions and well-defined experiences and notions of the past. She demonstrates how his legacy was legitimized and contested by comparing him to caudillos José Francisco Peña Gómez and Juan Bosch, as well as through instances when he is praised or questioned for being an American protégée. This book exhibits how diasporic Dominicans maintain and transplant their political knowledge after migration. In particular, notions of democracy, political trust, political accountability, human rights, and sovereignty associated with authoritarian pedagogy accumulate in their narratives of the past and in their accounts of politics and history. Key roles are played by shared historical, cultural, and linguistic symbols associated with the legacy of authoritarianism. Liberato demonstrates how Balaguer influenced the Dominican nation through implementing effective political pedagogies, which in turn helped reinforce and reinscribe some aspects of the pedagogies implemented by Dictator Trujillo and previous authoritarian leaders.
