Molecular Physics and Hypersonic Flows bridges the gap between the fluid dynamics and molecular physics communities, emphasizing the role played by elementary processes in hypersonic flows. In particular, the work is primarily dedicated to filling the gap between microscopic and macroscopic treatments of the source terms to be inserted in the fluid dynamics codes. The first part of the book describes the molecular dynamics of elementary processes both in the gas phase and in the interaction with surfaces by using quantum mechanical and phenomenological approaches. A second group of contributions describes thermodynamics and transport properties of air components, with special attention to the transport of internal energy. A series of papers is devoted to the experimental and theoretical study of the flow of partially ionized gases. Subsequent contributions treat modern computational techniques for 3-D hypersonic flow. Non-equilibrium vibrational kinetics are then described, together with the coupling of vibration-dissociation processes as they affect hypersonic flows. Special emphasis is given to the interfacing of non-equilibrium models with computational fluid dynamics methods. Finally, the last part of the book deals with the application of direct Monte Carlo methods in describing rarefied flows.

Advances in Atomic and Molecular Physics

The Third US/Mexico Symposium on Atomic and Molecular Physics brought together forty-five leading investigators in many fields. Both theory and experiment were well represented. First edition of an important collection of memoirs, from Febr. 1861 on, in the field of Tyndall's major work, the effects of solar and heat radiation on atmospheric gases (1860-1870). He then considered the scattering of light particles in the atmosphere (the Tyndall effect) and explained the blue color of the sky (Rayleigh scattering). The scattering of sunlight by dust particles led him to consider means of destroying airborne organic matter by heat . Tyndall is remembered chiefly for his efforts to verify the high absorptive and radiative power of aqueous vapor; to measure the absorption and transmission of heat by many different gasses and liquids . Practical applications of his work in meteorology, fog signaling, and bacteriology were seen within his lifetime. . (DSB).

This book aims to present a unified account of the physics of atoms and molecules from a modern viewpoint. It is based on courses given by the authors at Middle East Technical University, Ankara and Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, and is suitable for study at third and fourth year levels of an undergraduate course.Students should be able to read this volume and understand its contents without the need to supplement it by referring to more detailed discussions. The whole subject covered in this volume is expected to be finished in one semester.
