We are delighted to present the proceedings of the 8th IFIP/IEEE International Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS 2005). The MMNS 2005 conference was held in Barcelona, Spain on October 24–26, 2005. As in previous years, the conference brought together an international audience of researchers and scientists from industry and academia who are researching and developing state-of-the-art management systems, while creating a public venue for results dissemination and intellectual collaboration. This year marked a challenging chapter in the advancement of management systems for the wider management research community, with the growing complexities of the “so-called” multimedia over Internet, the proliferation of alternative wireless networks (WLL, WiFi and WiMAX) and 3G mobile services, intelligent and high-speed networks scalable multimedia services and the convergence of computing and communications for data, voice and video delivery. Contributions from the research community met this challenge with 65 paper submissions; 33 high-quality papers were subsequently selected to form the MMNS 2005 technical program. The diverse topics in this year’s program included wireless networking technologies, wireless network applications, quality of services, multimedia, Web applications, overlay network management, and bandwidth management.

Welcome to the third International Conference on Management of Multimedia Networks and Services (MMNS'2000) in Fortaleza (Brazil)! The first MMNS was held in Montreal ( Canada) in july 1997 and the second MMNS was held in Versailles (France) in November 1998. The MMNS conference takes place every year and a half and is aimed to be a truly international event by bringing together researchers and practitioners from all around the world and by organising the conference each time in a different continent/country. Over the past several years, there has been a considerable amount of research within the fields of multimedia networking and network management. Much of that work has taken place within the context of managing Quality-of Service in broadband integrated services digital networks such as the A TM, and more recently in IP-based networks, to respond to the requirements of emerging multimedia applications. A TM networks were designed to support multimedia traffic with diverse characteristics and can be used as the transfer mode for both wired and wireless networks. A new set of Internet protocols is being developed to provide better quality of service, which is a prerequisite for supporting multimedia applications. Multimedia applications have a different set of requirements, which impacts the design of the underlying communication network as well as its management. Several QoS management mechanisms intervening at different layers of the communication network are required including QoS-routing, QoS-based transport, QoS negotiation, QoS adaptation, FCAPS management, and mobility management.

In recent years we have witnessed the explosion of multimedia traffic on the Internet. The availability of high bandwidth connections together with the recent advances in high quality video and audio compression techniques have created a fertile ground for the growth of multimedia applications such as interactive video on demand, collaborative distance learning, and remote medical diagnosis. Furthermore, the availability of low bit rate video and audio applications (e.g., H.263 and G.728) and the proliferation of pervasive devices create a new demand for wireless multimedia communication systems. After a decade or more of research and development in multimedia networking, the research community has learned a number of lessons. First, increasing the capacity of the “best effort” networks and services does not provide an effective and permanent solution for offering a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). Second, the integration of service and network management is a key element in providing end to end service management. Third, management techniques for Internet multimedia services must be scalable and adaptive to guarantee QoS and maintain fairness with optimal network resource.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 1, University of Applied Sciences Technikum Vienna, course: Betriebliche Informationsnetze basierend auf SIP bzw. verwandten Protokollen wie SDP, RTP usw., language: English, abstract: Given the increasing penetration of Internet Protocol (IP) technologies and the tremendous growth in wireless data traffic, the telecom industry is evolving towards All-IP based Next Generation Networks (NGN). The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has specified an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in 3GPP Release 5 to support converged multimedia applications across both wireless and wireline devices. IMS provides full packet call control capabilities by using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP). SIP has been chosen by 3GPP as the signaling protocol to handle user registrations and multimedia session management in the IMS. Using IP protocols defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), IMS will merge cellular networks and the internet, offering new service capabilities for rapid service creation and deployment of integrated IP multimedia applications. This diploma thesis provides an insight into the IP Multimedia Core Network, specifically focusing on its key element, the Call Session Control Function (CSCF). The CSCF serves as control point to manage all IMS sessions in the network, whether they are voice, video, data, messaging, gaming, or any other service. Moreover, this paper discusses the requirements identified by 3GPP to support SIP in cellular networks, and the extensions to the SIP protocol suite in order to fulfill them. The practical part of the thesis evaluates the Open Source IMS Core platform of the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS with respect to the CSCF which is based on the SIP Express Router (SER). The analysis describes the new modules and advanced functions of SER, required to cope with the extended version of SIP and to act as a CSCF for IMS purposes.
