BOOK EXCERPT:

A reader’s guide to the morphology and syntax of Koine Greek From the pen of a seasoned instructor of biblical Greek, this book functions as both an essential resource for second-year students and an invaluable asset for all readers as they continue to hone and deepen their linguistic skills. It begins with a basic overview of the language for new learners and for those looking for a brief refresher before moving into nuanced matters of morphology and syntax. Whitacre’s aim is ultimately to help readers understand the subtleties of the language on the pages of the New Testament; thus, he engages with the biblical text both grammatically and exegetically, so that readers can experience its full power and beauty. Including numerous illustrative examples throughout and several useful appendices at the end, A Grammar of New Testament Greek is indispensable both as a textbook and as a reference for all readers of the Greek New Testament—and other texts written in Koine, such as the Septuagint and the Apostolic Fathers.

New Testament Greek Primer Third Edition

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

New Testament Greek Primer has established itself among Greek instructors as a popular and dependable guide to the Greek of the New Testament, appreciated for its accuracy, coverage, and well-designed exercises. Students appreciate easy-to-read explanations, English grammar bridges, user-friendly layout, and copious tables, charts, and indexes. Retaining the basic form and content, the third edition builds on this solid reputation with enhanced discussion, organization, examples, and exercises. The appendix on English grammar aids English-challenged students. Pictures from the author's extensive travel overseas illustrate the ancient Greco-Roman context of the Greek New Testament. Other resources include language lessons elaborating translation and morphology issues, convenient vocabulary reviews anticipating vocabulary exams, an answer key, and indexes of vocabulary, principal parts, paradigms, and subjects. The method is deductive and the goal focused on grammar and exegesis. An early emphasis on the noun system transitions to the principal parts of the verb, followed by moods, infinitives, and participles. Two lessons on the MI-verb system conclude the work. Examples and exercises are taken directly from the Greek New Testament.

The Text Of The Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The manuscripts that form the Greek New Testament are scattered throughout the world and are usually only accessible to scholars and professionals. These were the manuscripts read by the earliest Christians, which comprised their "New Testament." In his volumes, Philip Wesley Comfort bridges the gap between these extant copies and today's critical text by providing accurate transcriptions of the earliest New Testament manuscripts, with photographs on the facing pages so readers can see the works for themselves. Comfort also provides an introduction to each manuscript that summarizes the contents, date, current location, provenance, and other essential information, including the latest findings. This allows students and scholars to make well-informed decisions about the translation and interpretation of the New Testament. Volume 1 includes manuscripts from Papyrus 1-72. Volume 2 includes manuscripts from Papyrus 75-139 as well as from the uncials. In addition, it features a special section on determining the date of a manuscript. This two-volume set replaces the previously published single volume Text of the Earliest New Testament Greek Manuscripts, as it contains many new manuscripts, updated research, and higher quality images of all manuscripts previously covered.

Three Nuances Of The Perfect Indicative In The Greek New Testament

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book analyzes the existence of the three nuances of the perfect tense occurring in the Greek New Testament: resultative-stative, anterior (current relevance), and simple past. The ancient Greek perfect expresses a resultative-stative nuance, with intransitivity dominant. Some of these archaic perfects survived up to the Koine period and appear in the Greek New Testament. In Classical Greek, the perfect went through a transition from resultative to anterior (current relevance) with increasing transitivity. In the Koine period, the Greek perfect shows another semantic change from the anterior to simple past. In the end, the perfect merged with the aorist, ending up in decay. It disappeared until the modern Greek development of a perfect forming using the auxiliary ἔχω.
