Functional Numerical Methods Applications To Abstract Fractional Calculus

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book presents applications of Newton-like and other similar methods to solve abstract functional equations involving fractional derivatives. It focuses on Banach space-valued functions of a real domain – studied for the first time in the literature. Various issues related to the modeling and analysis of fractional order systems continue to grow in popularity, and the book provides a deeper and more formal analysis of selected issues that are relevant to many areas – including decision-making, complex processes, systems modeling and control – and deeply embedded in the fields of engineering, computer science, physics, economics, and the social and life sciences. The book offers a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students, and can also be used as a textbook for seminars on the above-mentioned subjects. All chapters are self-contained and can be read independently. Further, each chapter includes an extensive list of references.

Computational Contact Mechanics

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book contains a systematical analysis of geometrical situations leading to contact pairs -- point-to-surface, surface-to-surface, point-to-curve, curve-to-curve and curve-to-surface. Each contact pair is inherited with a special coordinate system based on its geometrical properties such as a Gaussian surface coordinate system or a Serret-Frenet curve coordinate system. The formulation in a covariant form allows in a straightforward fashion to consider various constitutive relations for a certain pair such as anisotropy for both frictional and structural parts. Then standard methods well known in computational contact mechanics such as penalty, Lagrange multiplier methods, combination of both and others are formulated in these coordinate systems. Such formulations require then the powerful apparatus of differential geometry of surfaces and curves as well as of convex analysis. The final goals of such transformations are then ready-for-implementation numerical algorithms within the finite element method including any arbitrary discretization techniques such as high order and isogeometric finite elements, which are most convenient for the considered geometrical situation. The book proposes a consistent study of geometry and kinematics, variational formulations, constitutive relations for surfaces and discretization techniques for all considered geometrical pairs and contains the associated numerical analysis as well as some new analytical results in contact mechanics.

The Mathematics Of Finite Elements And Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications provides information pertinent to the mathematics of finite elements, applications, algorithms, and computational techniques. This book discusses the developments in the mathematics of finite elements. Organized into 32 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the basis of the finite element process as a general approximation tool. This text then examines the methods for obtaining bounds on the errors in finite element solutions to two-dimensional elliptic boundary value problems defined on simply connected polygonal regions. Other chapters consider the practical implementation of the Galerkin and the Rayleigh–Ritz methods to equations of importance to physics and engineering. This book discusses as well a fundamental investigation into the problem of convergence in the finite element method. The final chapter deals with an algorithm that is applicable to the analysis of arbitrary plane stress or plane strain configurations. This book is a valuable resource for numerical analysts, mathematical physicist, applied mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers.

Keller Box Method And Its Application

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Most of the problems arising in science and engineering are nonlinear. They are inherently difficult to solve. Traditional analytical approximations are valid only for weakly nonlinear problems, and often break down for problems with strong nonlinearity. This book presents the current theoretical developments and applications of the Keller-box method to nonlinear problems. The first half of the book addresses basic concepts to understand the theoretical framework for the method. In the second half of the book, the authors give a number of examples of coupled nonlinear problems that have been solved by means of the Keller-box method. The particular area of focus is on fluid flow problems governed by nonlinear equation.
