BOOK EXCERPT:
The present volume presents a revision of the Wingia group of 91 genera, a group which appears to be almost entirely endemic to Australia. Detailed information is provided on the morphology, including the genitalia of both sexes, and up-to-date data on the distribution, biology and larval food plants of the species referred to each genus. A list of the species assigned to each genus is given, with full synonymy, references to the original descriptions, label data and repository of the primary type, lectotype designations, and abbreviated distribution data. Illustrations of the adults, wing venation, and male and female genitalia of the type species are included, as well as of the heads and eggs of representative genera. A key to genera is also provided.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Losses of forests and their insect inhabitants are a major global conservation concern, spanning tropical and temperate forest regions throughout the world. This broad overview of Australian forest insect conservation draws on studies from many places to demonstrate the diversity and vulnerability of forest insects and how their conservation may be pursued through combinations of increased understanding, forest protection and silvicultural management in both natural and plantation forests. The relatively recent history of severe human disturbance to Australian forests ensures that reasonably natural forest patches remain and serve as ‘models’ for many forest categories. They are also refuges for many forest biota extirpated from the wider landscapes as forests are lost, and merit strenuous protection from further changes, and wider efforts to promote connectivity between otherwise isolated remnant patches. In parallel, the recent attention to improving forest insect conservation in harmony with insect pest management continues to benefit from perspectives generated from better-documented faunas elsewhere. Lessons from the northern hemisphere, in particular, have led to revelations of the ecological importance and vulnerability of many insect taxa in forests, together with clear evidence that ‘conservation can work’ in concert with wider forest uses. A brief outline of the variety of Australian tropical and temperate forests and woodlands, and of the multitude of endemic and, often, highly localised insects that depend on them highlights needs for conservation (both of single focal species and wider forest-dependent radiations and assemblages). The ways in which insects contribute to sustained ecological integrity of these complex ecosystems provide numerous opportunities for practical conservation.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Oecophorid moths are an unusual family of small moths occurring throughout the world. Their caterpillars usually feed on dead leaves or in dead wood, unlike most moth caterpillars which feed on living leaves of plants. New Zealand has a diverse and interesting fauna of Oecophoridae, containing well over 200 species. The evolution of such a relatively large number of oecophorid species in New Zealand is probably due to the abundance of leaf-litter and dead wood in its ancient evergreen forests. Most NZ Oecophoridae have not been studied in detail since the 1920s, and only two new species have been scientifically described in the last 50 years. However, many other unnamed species are known in collections, and eight of these are described in this book. The genus Hierodoris probably belongs to an ancient lineage, and only occurs in NZ. The 18 species are very varied in size and colouration, and some are very attractive, with metallic shining scales on their wings. This Fauna gives an overview of NZ Oecophoridae and defines a new genus-group, the ?Hierodoris group?. The systematic placement of this group is discussed. The endemic NZ genus Hierodioris Meyrick is revised and fully redescribed, and all species are fully described and the adults illustrated in colour. The larvae and pupae are described for the species in which they are known. Information is given on biology, distribution, and conservation status, with five species considered potentially threatened at the national level."

BOOK EXCERPT:
The book introduces basic entomology, emphasising perspectives on insect diversity important in conservation assessment and setting priorities for management, as a foundation for managers and others without entomological training or background. It bridges the gap between photographic essays on insect identification and more technical texts, to illustrate and discuss many aspects of taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary diversity in the Australian insect fauna, and its impacts in human life, through outlines of many aspects of insect natural history.

seem as appropriate now as the original balance was when Dr A. D. Imms' textbook was first published over fifty years ago. There are 35 new figures, all based on published illustrations, the sources of which are acknowledged in the captions. We are grateful to the authors concerned and also to Miss K. Priest of Messrs Chapman & Hall, who saved us from many errors and omissions, and to Mrs R. G. Davies for substantial help in preparing the bibliographies and checking references. London O. W. R. R. G. D. May 1976 Part III THEORDERSOFINSECTS THE CLASSIFICATION AND PHYLOGENY OF INSECTS The classification of insects has passed through many changes and with the growth of detailed knowledge an increasing number of orders has come to be recognized. Handlirsch (1908) and Wilson and Doner (1937) have reviewed the earlier attempts at classification, among which the schemes of Brauer (1885), Sharp (1899) and Borner (1904) did much to define the more distinctive recent orders. In 1908 Handlirsch published a more revolutionary system, incorporating recent and fossil forms, which gave the Collembola, Thysanura and Diplura the status of three independent Arthropodan classes and considered as separate orders such groups as the Sialoidea, Raphidioidea, Heteroptera and Homoptera. He also split up the old order Orthoptera, gave its components ordinal rank and regrouped them with some of the other orders into a subclass Orthopteroidea and another subclass Blattaeformia.

It is the only listing that covers insect anatomy, behaviour, biology, ecology, histology, molecular biology, morphology, pest management, taxonomy and systematics. Common names, scientific binomen and taxonomic classifications are provided as well as order, suborder, superfamily, family and subfamily names and diagnostic features of orders and families. With new and updated terms, particularly in molecular biology, phylogeny and spatial technology, this revised new edition of A Dictionary of Entomology is an essential reference for researchers and students of entomology and related disciplines.
