BOOK EXCERPT:

Are the worlds of science and religion irreconcilable? Has modern science with its theory of evolution disproved the biblical account of the origin of life? If one accepts the biblical account of origins, does one then have to reject science? Scientist and Christian believer Ariel A. Roth argues that taken together, science and religion give us a more complete and sensible understanding of the world around us, our place in it, and our ultimate meaning and fate. Roth examines such topics as the evidence for evolution and creation, the Flood, the strengths and limitations of the scientific method, and the reliability of Scripture. He concludes that the biblical model of a recent creation by God leaves fewer unanswered questions then either science's evolutionary model or any view between the two positions, such as progressive creation or theistic evolution. - Back cover.

The Truth Of The Origin Of The Universe

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Life Origin - Black Hole – God The origins of life, the mysterious nature of black holes, and the idea of a higher power or God have long fascinated humans. The question of how life originated on Earth has puzzled scientists for centuries. These topics have sparked numerous debates, discussions, and theories among theologians, and philosophers alike. We attempt to unravel the mysteries of the universe. We will delve into the Creation, the scientific and the philosophical perspectives on the origins of life, the enigmatic nature of black holes, and the fact of the Creator. While each of these subjects is distinct in their own right, there are interesting connections that can be drawn among them. Black holes, on the other hand, are some of the most enigmatic objects in the universe. These dense regions of spacetime have such strong gravitational pulls that not even light can escape them. Scientists have long been intrigued by black holes and continue to study them to unlock their secrets. While black holes are thought to form from the collapse of massive stars, there is still much that remains unknown about these mysterious objects. The existence of God is a topic that has been debated for centuries. The question of whether a higher power, or deity, exists has divided people for millennia. Some argue that the complexity and beauty of the universe point to an intelligent designer, while others believe that the laws of nature are sufficient to explain the workings of the cosmos. The existence of God is a deeply personal and philosophical question that continues to captivate believers and skeptics alike.

Houses Origins

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Monograph of the work of WA design, a design/build firm established by David Stark Wilson with a focus on converging buildings and landscapes. "The origins of the firm's work are also deeply rooted in the vernacular buildings of California and this influence is clearly illustrated in this impressive monograph" Arch Daily This beautifully illustrated monograph takes the reader on a journey through a number of stunning houses in the California landscape, designed and built by Berkeley firm WA Design. Since being established by David Stark Wilson in 1985, the firm has completed a broad range of new residential and commercial projects. This book focuses on WA Design's residential buildings. The firm's design philosophy emphasises the interrelationship of building and site. Each design begins as a considered response to a set of criteria dictated by the site and client. Although progressive, the firm's designs draw heavily on the local vernacular. Ordering principles borrow from the building's context and often relate metaphorically to the natural landscape, connecting the buildings to their site and surroundings in a meaningful way. Sustainable and solar features are also a crucial component in the firm's design objectives and are seamlessly integrated with the architecture. AUTHOR: David Stark Wilson's lifelong interests in nature, mountaineering, mathematics and photography eventually culminated in a pursuit of furniture and building design. Born in Berkeley, California in 1961, his early architectural sensibility was strongly influenced by Bay Area architect Bernard Maybeck but, as his design sense matured, Wilson's direction became progressively more modern. His current interests include using materials, form and colour to elicit the resonant responses we experience in nature, yet which often elude us in the built environment. Wilson is the author of two photography books, 'Structures of Utility' and 'Above All.' SELLING POINTS: - Showcases the work of an architect with a rare gift for designing structures that converge with their natural surroundings - Stunning houses within the Californian landscape are illuminated by beautiful photography, detailed plans and descriptive text 300 col.

Developing The Hall Of Human Origins

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book focuses on the development of the National Museum of Natural History’s David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins. As one of the most visited human evolution exhibits in the world and the largest such exhibit in the United States, it has tremendous influence on public perception and knowledge of human evolution. The chapters explore how this exhibit came about, how it has changed since opening, and the associated educational and public outreach activities of members of the Smithsonian’s Human Origins Program. The author uses the term “adaptive resilience” to describe a central theme of the exhibit, our species’ adaptation to changing environments as a key feature of our success, and to refer to the resilience of Richard B. Potts in creating his vision for the hall. Contextual sections situate the hall’s development within the history of paleoanthropology, the politics of evolution and climate change, and African contributions. The book will be of particular interest to scholars of anthropology and museum studies as well as the history of science and science communication.

The Early Career Framework Origins Outcomes And Opportunities

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Teacher quality is widely reputed to be the key determinant of educational success for students. Teachers at the beginning of their career need support and guidance in providing a sustained, high quality experience for their learners. The role of continuing professional development (CPD) is crucial in honing and refining the knowledge, understanding and skills of teachers. Effective CPD can also provide teachers with the self-efficacy needed, particularly when they start teaching, to stay in the profession. With teacher shortages reported across the globe, and up to one third of teachers in England leaving the profession by their fifth year in teaching, CPD is an attractive solution to retain teachers. The Department for Education have established a mandatory CPD framework for all early career teachers (ECTs) teaching in schools in England – The Early Career Framework (ECF). Tanya Ovenden-Hope (Editor) brings together insights from those most closely connected to the ECF; the training providers, school leaders and academics involved in understanding the efficacy of professional development and learning in schools. Ovenden-Hope offers an historical record of the ECF, showing where it came from, what it offers now for schools and early career teachers (ECTs) and the challenges and opportunities for development in the future.

The Antonio Ii Badile Album Of Drawings The Origins Of Collecting Drawings In Early Modern Northern Italy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Evelyn Karet's in-depth study of the Antonio II Badile Album - the earliest known example of an art collection pasted onto the pages of a book - is both focused and broad in its appeal to those interested in the early modern era. The provenance of the album is traced from its assemblage to the seventeenth-century collection of Conte Lodovico Moscardo to its dismantling by the dealer Francis Matthiesen in the 1950s, establishing that the volume conserved in the Frits Lugt Collection is not an original but a replica produced by Matthiesen. Although Antonio II must be celebrated as the collector of the drawings, new paleographic analysis has identified the actual compiler of the album after Antonio?s death providing a terminus post quem in the late 1530s or early 1540s. Karet enlarges the focus from the album itself to the historic tradition of collecting drawings in northern Italy in the early modern era before Vasari, for which the album provides a new point of reference. Throughout the book, Karet discusses the Badile family, examines the individual drawings in the book, investigates the contacts between artists and humanists, their rich, diverse collections and the humanist mind-set that fostered the appreciation of drawings. She explores notable early drawing collections in northern Italy and the role of northern Italy as a center of collection in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The book concludes with two appendices: a reconstruction of the original album, including a discussion of the reconstruction process, suggestions about what the album originally looked like, and a page-by-page guide to its contents; and a detailed analysis of Francis Matthiesen's career. This book opens up new areas of inquiry into an overlooked subject.
