Initially, computer systems performance analyses were carried out primarily because of limited resources. Due to ever increasing functional complexity of computational systems and user requirements, performance engineering continues to play a major role in software development. This book assesses the state of the art in performance engineering. Besides revised chapters drawn from two workshops on performance engineering held in 2000, additional chapters were solicited in order to provide complete coverage of all relevant aspects. This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th European Performance En- neering Workshop (EPEW 2010), held in Bertinoro, Italy, on September 23–24, 2010. The purpose of this workshop series is to gather academic and industrial researchers working on all aspects of performance engineering. This year the workshop was structured around three main areas: system and network p- formance engineering, software performance engineering, and the modeling and evaluation techniques supporting them. This edition of the workshop attracted 38 submissions, whose authors we wish to thank for their interest in EPEW 2010. After a careful review process during which every paper was refereed by at least three reviewers, the Program Committee selected 16 papers for presentation at the workshop. We warmly thank all the members of the ProgramCommittee and all the reviewersfor their fair and constructive comments and discussions. The workshop program was enriched by two keynote talks given by Marco Roccetti and Ralf Reussner. We conclude by expressing our gratitude to all the people who contributed to the organization of EPEW 2010, in particular the sta? of the University Residential Center of Bertinoro. Much of a software architect’s life is spent designing software systems to meet a set of quality requirements. General software quality attributes include scalability, security, performance or reliability. Quality attribute requirements are part of an application’s non-functional requirements, which capture the many facets of how the functional - quirements of an application are achieved. Understanding, modeling and continually evaluating quality attributes throughout a project lifecycle are all complex engineering tasks whichcontinuetochallengethe softwareengineeringscienti ccommunity. While we search for improved approaches, methods, formalisms and tools that are usable in practice and can scale to large systems, the complexity of the applications that the so- ware industry is challenged to build is ever increasing. Thus, as a research community, there is little opportunity for us to rest on our laurels, as our innovations that address new aspects of system complexity must be deployed and validated. To this end the 5th International Conference on the Quality of Software Archit- tures (QoSA) 2009 focused on architectures for adaptive software systems. Modern software systems must often recon guretheir structure and behavior to respond to c- tinuous changes in requirements and in their execution environment. In these settings, quality models are helpful at an architectural level to guide systematic model-driven software development strategies by evaluating the impact of competing architectural choices.

The need to evaluate computer and communication systems performance and dependability is continuously growing as a consequence of both the increasing complexity of systems and the user requirements in terms of timing behaviour. The 10th International Conference on Modelling Techniques and Tools for C- puter Performance Evaluation, held in Palma in September 1998, was organised with the aim of creating a forum in which both theoreticians and practitioners could interchange recent techniques, tools, and experiences in these areas. This meeting follows the predecessor conferences of this series: 1984 Paris 1988 Palma 1994 Wien 1985 Sophia Antipolis 1991 Torino 1995 Heidelberg 1987 Paris 1992 Edinburgh 1997 Saint Malo The tradition of this conference series continued this year where many high quality papers were submitted. The Programme Committee had a di cult task in selecting the best papers. Many ne papers could not be included in the program due to space constraints. All accepted papers are included in this volume. Also, a set of submissions describing performance modelling tools was transformed into tool presentations and demonstrations. A brief description of these tools is included in this volume. The following table gives the overall statistics for the submissions.
