The research papers in this volume describe recent, original developments in techniques, tools and applications in the area of communication system performance. Involved in the project are researchers from the world's leading universities, research institutes and companies.

This Festschrift volume is published in honor of Günter Haring on the occasion of his emerital celebration and contains invited papers by key researchers in the field of performance evaluation presented at the workshop Performance Evaluation of Computer and Communication Systems - Milestones and Future Challenges, PERFORM 2010, held in Vienna, Austria, in October 2010. Günter Haring has dedicated most of his scientific professional life to performance evaluation and the design of distributed systems, contributing in particular to the field of workload characterization. In addition to his own contributions and leadership in international research projects, he is and has been an excellent mentor of young researchers demonstrated by their own brilliant scientific careers. The 20 thoroughly refereed papers range from visionary to in-depth research papers and are organized in the following topical sections: milestones and evolutions; trends: green ICT and virtual machines; modeling; mobility and mobile networks; communication and computer networks; and load balancing, analysis, and management.

This book constitutes the refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on High Performance Networking, Computing, and Communication systems, ICHCC 2011, held in Singapore in May 2011. The conference was held together with the Second International Conference on Theoretical and Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, ICTMF 2011, which proceedings are published in CCIS 164. The 84 revised selected papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. The topics covered range from computational science, engineering and technology to digital signal processing, and computational biology to game theory, and other related topices.

This book is written as a very concise introduction for students taking a first course in communication systems. It provides the reader with fundamentals of digital communication systems and disseminates the essentials needed for the understanding of wire and wireless communication systems for Electrical Engineers. It covers important topics right from the beginning of the subject which communication engineers must understand. Example problems in each chapter will help them in understanding the materials well. The study of data networking will include multiple access, reliable packet transmission, routing and protocols of the internet. The concepts taught in class will be discussed in the context of aerospace communication systems: aircraft communications, satellite communications. The book includes example problems in each chapter to help the reader in understanding the materials well.

The 2009 International Conference on High-Performance Networking, Computing and Communication Systems and the 2009 International Conference on Theoretical and Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (ICHCC -ICTMF 2009) were held during December 13–14, 2009, in Sanya, Hainan Island, China. ICHCC -ICTMF 2009 was a comprehensive conference focused on the various aspects of advances in high-performance networking, computing, communication systems and mathematical foundations. The conferences provided a chance for academic and industry profe- ionals to discuss recent progress in the area of high-performance networking, com- ting, communication systems and mathematical foundations. The conferences were co-sponsored by the Intelligent Information Technology Application Research Association, Hong Kong and Wuhan Institute of Technology, China. The goal was to bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of this area. We received 60 submissions. Every paper was reviewed by three Program C- mittee members, and 15 were selected as regular papers for ICHCC -ICTMF 2009, representing a 25% acceptance rate for regular papers. The participants of the conference had the chance to hear from renowned keynote speakers Jun Wang from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong and Chin-Chen Chang from Feng Chia University, Taiwan. This is the sixth conference in the series which started in 1981 in Paris, followed by conferences held in Zurich (1984), Rio de Janeirio (1987), Barcelona (1991), and Raleigh (1993). The main objective of this IFIP conference series is to provide a platform for the exchange of recent and original contributions in communications systems in the areas of performance analysis, architectures, and applications. There are many exiciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in Asynchronous Transfer Mode·(ATM), multimedia services, and high speed protocols. It is commonly believed in the communications industry that ATM represents the next generation of networking. Yet, there are a number of issues that has been worked on in various standards bodies, government and industry research and development labs, and universities towards enabling high speed networks in general and ATM networks in particular. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the Sixth IFIP W.G. 6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and proposing various state of the art solutions to a subset of them. The program includes 25 papers selected by the program committee out of 57 papers submitted.

Retaining the first edition's technology-centred perspective, this book gives readers a sound understanding of packed-switched, circuit-switched and ATM networks, and techniques for controlling them.
