The research papers in this volume describe recent, original developments in techniques, tools and applications in the area of communication system performance. Involved in the project are researchers from the world's leading universities, research institutes and companies.

This is the sixth conference in the series which started in 1981 in Paris, followed by conferences held in Zurich (1984), Rio de Janeirio (1987), Barcelona (1991), and Raleigh (1993). The main objective of this IFIP conference series is to provide a platform for the exchange of recent and original contributions in communications systems in the areas of performance analysis, architectures, and applications. There are many exiciting trends and developments in the communications industry, several of which are related to advances in Asynchronous Transfer Mode·(ATM), multimedia services, and high speed protocols. It is commonly believed in the communications industry that ATM represents the next generation of networking. Yet, there are a number of issues that has been worked on in various standards bodies, government and industry research and development labs, and universities towards enabling high speed networks in general and ATM networks in particular. Reflecting these trends, the technical program of the Sixth IFIP W.G. 6.3 Conference on Performance of Computer Networks consists of papers addressing a wide range of technical challenges and proposing various state of the art solutions to a subset of them. The program includes 25 papers selected by the program committee out of 57 papers submitted.

This volume contains the complete set of tutorial papers presented at the 16th IFIP (International Federation for Information Processing) Working Group 7.3 International Symposium on Computer Performance Modelling, Measurement and Evaluation, and a number of tutorial papers presented at the 1993 ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Special Interest Group METRICS Conference on Measurement and Modeling of Computer Systems. The principal goal of the volume is to present an overview of recent results in the field of modeling and performance evaluation of computer and communication systems. The wide diversity of applications and methodologies included in the tutorials attests to the breadth and richness of current research in the area of performance modeling. The tutorials may serve to introduce a reader to an unfamiliar research area, to unify material already known, or simply to illustrate the diversity of research in the field. The extensive bibliographies guide readers to additional sources for further reading.

The 2009 International Conference on High-Performance Networking, Computing and Communication Systems and the 2009 International Conference on Theoretical and Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science (ICHCC -ICTMF 2009) were held during December 13–14, 2009, in Sanya, Hainan Island, China. ICHCC -ICTMF 2009 was a comprehensive conference focused on the various aspects of advances in high-performance networking, computing, communication systems and mathematical foundations. The conferences provided a chance for academic and industry profe- ionals to discuss recent progress in the area of high-performance networking, com- ting, communication systems and mathematical foundations. The conferences were co-sponsored by the Intelligent Information Technology Application Research Association, Hong Kong and Wuhan Institute of Technology, China. The goal was to bring together researchers from academia and industry as well as practitioners to share ideas, problems and solutions relating to the multifaceted aspects of this area. We received 60 submissions. Every paper was reviewed by three Program C- mittee members, and 15 were selected as regular papers for ICHCC -ICTMF 2009, representing a 25% acceptance rate for regular papers. The participants of the conference had the chance to hear from renowned keynote speakers Jun Wang from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong and Chin-Chen Chang from Feng Chia University, Taiwan. This book explores new analytical techniques and tools for the performance evaluation of distributed and integrated computer communication systems. The systems considered are those arising in LAN, MAN, WAN broadband ISDN, and ATM switching. These systems are mathematically modelled and analysed. Analytical results are presented on the basic queueing models such as multi-queue, priority queue, queueing network, queue with bursty input and superposed input, and multi-server queue. These results can be usefully applied for the performance evaluation of all the above systems.

This book constitutes the refereed post-proceedings of the Second International Conference on High Performance Networking, Computing, and Communication systems, ICHCC 2011, held in Singapore in May 2011. The conference was held together with the Second International Conference on Theoretical and Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, ICTMF 2011, which proceedings are published in CCIS 164.
