Planning For Small Town Change

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Change is inevitable in all communities: they both grow and decline. Planning is a means by which we have sought to manage this change. It has not always succeeded in providing the types of settlements and environments which many residents and others want, either because it is operating with the wrong policies or because it is failing to ensure that the right policies are effectively implemented. These failings have opened planning to criticism by a dominant neoliberal orthodoxy which shapes an increasingly difficult environment in which planning has to operate. Planning for Small Town Change builds on an underexploited selection of international research and the authors’ English case studies to consider the efficacy of planning for change. Drawing on insightful small town experiences, three themes emerge: understanding and conceptualising change; appreciating the potential within place; and the mechanisms for planning and delivery. The research draws on many examples of how key actors have made a significant difference to specific places and provides important insights into how the planning process can be better matched to the long-term and complex challenges faced. Whilst small town experiences are often neglected, they are found to be particularly insightful in understanding the potential roles of local communities and the importance of place quality when planning for change.

Managing Change Creativity And Innovation

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A fresh approach to managing organizational change by looking at it as complex, dynamic and messy as opposed to a series of neat, linear stages and processes leading to success. Key to the approach is the idea that change, creativity and innovation all overlap and interconnect rather than being three separate areas of study and that managing the three together is central to organizations having the competitive edge in developing new technologies and techniques, products and services. The book continues to offer practical guidelines as well as a theoretical understanding of change, creativity and innovation. It delivers an equal balance of critical perspectives and sound ideas for organizational change and development and presents the idea that change can be proactive, driven by creativity and innovation. The new edition includes additional change management content including learning, personal change, managing the self, employability, developments in conventional Organizational Development and new emergent forms including appreciative inquiry. Along with a series of rich international case studies, including TNT Australia, Amazon, Leeds Rhinos, Jerusalem Paints, Alpha Pro Pump and KPMG. It is supported by a range of learning and revision aids including reflective exercises, review and discussion questions and hands-on research tasks. Managing People

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

'Managing People' addresses the perspective of the individual manager whose role includes the management of people, as well as issues concerning the organization as a whole. The theme of the book is about responding to organizational and environmental change and the people skills that will be required for this in the twenty-first century. A system model of how the different parts of HR fit together is included, with the acknowledgement that different contexts require different approaches, and the role of the individual manager is considered within them. The stakeholder perspective is examined as it affects the management of people, and links human resource management policy and practice to financial results. This new edition also reflects the modern move towards performance management as an organizational business strategy. The role of leadership at all levels of the organization is also emphasized. There is a new chapter on managing challenging situations, such as the management of diversity, power, stress, and conflict, as well as the handling of grievances and discipline. Another new chapter pulls together the increasingly important aspects of the legal regulation of behaviour at work, and stresses the move from collective relationships to individual rights in the workplace. This text is suitable for use on the Chartered Management Institute Diploma level modules on recruitment and selection, managing performance, and developing teams and individuals. It is also to be used for NVQ courses in HRM at levels 4 and 5 and is valuable for HR Professionals and line managers.
