BOOK EXCERPT:
The brief and student-friendly approach of this book boils economics down to its essentials, by considering what is truly important for students to learn in their first course in economics. In keeping with the authors' philosophy of showing students the power of economic tools and the importance of economic ideas, this edition pays careful attention to regional and global policies and economic issues ' including the impacts of the ongoing global financial crisis, inflation, unemployment, interest rates, and monetary and fiscal policy. Continuing global financial uncertainty and the current state of the Australian economy provide a constant supply of new material, re-evaluated models, and policy changes and updates for the Principles of Macroeconomics text. The book emphasises the material that students should and do find interesting about the study of the economy, resulting in a focus on applications and policy, and less on formal economic theory. Principles of Macroeconomics, 7e encourages students to make their own judgements by presenting both sides of the debate on five controversial issues facing policymakers: the proper degree of policy activism in response to the business cycle, the choice between rules and discretion in the conduct of monetary policy, the desirability of reaching zero inflation, the importance of balancing the government's budget, and the need for tax reform to encourage saving.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Most of us hope to do what morality requires of us. But what if we can't figure out what it does require? A soldier may know that morality requires him not to kill an innocent civilian but he can't tell whether the driver of a suspicious car is an innocent civilian or a terrorist about to detonate a bomb. Holly M. Smith addresses this problem in Making Morality Work by asking whether we should reject moral codes that can't be used by anyone hampered by inadequate information. When considering questions of morality, we call on moral theories to play both a theoretical and a practical role. These theories provide accounts of what makes actions right or wrong, and also provide a standard by which agents can guide their own conduct. It is usually assumed that a single theory can serve both roles, but limited knowledge often prevents people from using traditional normative theories to make decisions. Smith examines three major strategies for addressing this 'epistemic problem' in morality before developing an innovative solution that overcomes the weaknesses of prior approaches. Making Morality Work opens a path towards resolving a deep problem in moral life.

Featuring more than twenty-five case studies of leaders throughout history, A Casebook of Transformational and Transactional Leadership supplements existing texts on transformational leadership and the full range model to promote higher levels of understanding of transformational and transactional leadership behaviors. Beginning with an overview of transformational and transactional behavior components, Arenas describes the original tenets of leadership researchers, demonstrating how practicing the principles of full range leadership can aid those who guide or manage others. The subsequent chapters examine influential figures from various organizational environments to provide readers with examples that connect with core full range leadership concepts. Finally, each chapter ends with a discussion question, helping to engage students with the material and encouraging further reflection and study. A Casebook of Transformational and Transactional Leadership is essential reading for both graduate and undergraduate students of leadership development, as well as military and non-military professionals in leadership, leadership development, business and management, and education.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The third edition of The Principles of the Law of Restitution brings this widely cited and influential volume fully up to date. It has been substantially rewritten to reflect the significant changes in the law of restitution and the expansion in the theoretical and critical commentary on the subject. Following important decisions of the Supreme Court and other courts, large-scale changes have been made to the chapters on enrichment, at the expense of the claimant, mistake, claims against public authorities, and change of position. Additionally, this edition contains a new chapter on the operation of juridical bars on restitutionary claims. References to developments in other jurisdictions have been expanded for this edition, reflecting the significance of these changes and how they assist in the interpretation of English law and provide a basis for criticising that law. Further, in the light of leading cases and the contributions of restitutionary scholars around the world, the author's views on specific controversial debates about the ambit, function, and interpretation of the subject have changed, sometimes radically. One significant aspect of the book remains unchanged: the book continues to focus on the identification and analysis of the principles which underpin the law of restitution as a whole, but with reference to its three distinct parts: unjust enrichment, restitution for wrongs, and the vindication of property rights. This approach provides the reader with a peerless guide to the law of restitution.
