BOOK EXCERPT:
Fairacres Publications 154 Sister Pauline Margaret provides wise guidance in the practice of the Jesus Prayer, or the invocation of the name of Jesus in prayer. She draws on the tradition of the gospels and on her own experience of using this prayer and of sharing her insights in retreats, prayer workshops and quiet days. Noting that the primary meaning of ‘amateur’ is ‘lover’, she points out that when it comes to prayer, everyone is an amateur, a person who practises prayer for love.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Do you long for a more powerful prayer life? Do you grow discouraged when your prayers don't seem to change anything or allow you to hear God's voice? In this six-session video Bible study workshop (video access included), Anne Graham Lotz presents a biblical approach to prayer that will help you: Learn to listen for God's voice, Know Him in a personal relationship, and Communicate with Him through His Word. By taking a close look at the life of Daniel, Anne unpacks the prayer he prayed in Daniel 9. Following the pattern of Daniel's original prayer as a model for how we speak to our Creator, she helps us develop a more meaningful and powerful prayer life. For an entire generation, Daniel's people had been held in captivity and separated from their homeland. But when Daniel read a prophecy in which God said He would restore His people to Jerusalem after seventy years, he claimed that promise and cried out for to the Lord to bring it to pass. Daniel's example of praying God's Word back to Him is what Anne calls "reversed thunder." In this six-session study, Anne explains how we can reverse the thunder until Heaven is moved and we see real change in our own lives and the lives of those we're praying for. This study guide has everything you need for a full Bible study experience, including: The study guide itself—with video notes, personal study and group discussion sections, and a guide to best practices for leading a group. An individual access to stream all six video sessions online. (DVD also available separately) This guide includes weekly Bible study readings, group activities, and space for writing your own prayers. It is ideal for use in small groups and Sunday school classes and includes a simplified Bible study track for more limited meeting time (such as a workplace lunchtime setting). BOOK EXCERPT:
Study Manual content illuminates some aspect of the Jesus in the Gospels each week and connects Scripture to daily life and Jesus' call to discipleship. The overarching aim is to deepen discipleship through better understanding of the biblical texts and their message. The study helps group members understand that Jesus is rooted in Judaism and the Scriptures of Judaism and that Christianity and the New Testament are rooted in the Scriptures of Judaism--our Old Testament. The Study Manual guides daily study and preparation for the weekly group meeting. The main elements in the format are designated by scriptural phrases: "They have no wine" (John 2:3) is a brief statement about the human condition and alerts the reader to some aspect of daily life that Scripture can shed light on. "Beginning with Moses and all the prophets" (Luke 24:27) is a way of referring to Scripture as a whole and signals the fact that we can understand Jesus in the Gospels better by understanding the Old Testament better. "Do you want to become his disciples, too?" (John 9:27, New International Version) is designed to stimulate thoughtful reflection so readers can come to their own conclusions about what their own discipleship calls for. Accompanying each day's Scripture reading assignments are suggestions of things to look for that take the reader deeper into Scripture. As readers become aware of detail in Scripture, they might ask themselves repeatedly, What am I to make of this? The study manual provides space for writing notes on insights, observations, and questions related to the Scripture, and for putting into words personal perceptions of Jesus from the week's Scripture.
