Wealth And Poverty In Jewish Tradition

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Economic inequity is an issue of worldwide concern in the twenty-first century. Although these issues have not troubled all people at all times, they are nonetheless not new. Thus, it is not surprising that Judaism has developed many perspectives, theoretical and practical, to explain and ameliorate the circumstances that produce serious economic disparity. This volume offers an accessible collection of articles that deal comprehensively with this phenomenon from a variety of approaches and perspectives. Within this framework, the fourteen authors who contributed to Wealth and Poverty in Jewish Tradition bring a formidable array of experience and insight to uncover interconnected threads of conversation and activities that characterize Jewish thought and action. Among the questions raised, for which there are frequently multiple responses: Is the giving of tzedakah (generally, although imprecisely, translated as charity) a command or an impulse? Does the Jewish tradition give priority to the donor or to the recipient? To what degree is charity a communal responsibility? Is there something inherently ennobling or, conversely, debasing about being poor? How have basic concepts about wealth and poverty evolved from biblical through rabbinic and medieval sources until the modern period? What are some specific historical events that demonstrate either marked success or bitter failure? And finally, are there some relevant concepts and practices that are distinctively, if not uniquely, Jewish? It is a singular strength of this collection that appropriate attention is given, in a style that is both accessible and authoritative, to the vast and multiform conversations that are recorded in the Talmud and other foundational documents of rabbinic Judaism. Moreover, perceptive analysis is not limited to the past, but also helps us to comprehend circumstances among todays Jews. It is equally valuable that these authors are attuned to the differences between aspirations and the realities in which actual people have lived.

Wealth In The Dead Sea Scrolls And In The Qumran Community

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume is concerned with exploring sectarian attitudes toward wealth and the economic practices that gave rise to and issued from those attitudes. An introductory chapter establishes the state of the question. Three subsequent chapters focus on major sectarian texts: the Damascus Document, the Rule of the Community, and 4QInstruction A. Other sectarian and non-sectarian texts that mention wealth are discussed in a fifth chapter, while archaeological evidence from the Qumran region and contemporary documentary texts are introduced in chapters seven and eight. Finally, ancient secondary testimony on Essene economic practices is discussed. The book breaks new ground in arguing for several biblical rationales for the practice of shared wealth. Its integration of archaeological and documentary evidence sheds surprising new light on the economic organization of the Qumran community.

The Truth About Material Wealth Is It God S Blessing In Disguise

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The text of this book reveals the fact that because of poverty in our world, theres a desire for every being to accumulate material possessions; therefore, the temptation to pursue this cause of action can never be underestimated regardless of our belief in the Lord God. Regardless of the desire to be wealthy, however, many believers still ascertain the fact that poverty must be encouraged as part of our faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. They support the argument from the biblical text thus: For, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God (Luke 18:25). Conversely, other believers assert that God does not refute richness and therefore also affirms their belief with the biblical verse that says in the Proverbs 22:7 that the rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. In Ecclesiastes 5:19 we hear further thus: When God gives any man a wealth and possessions and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his workthis is a gift of God. Furthermore we hear from 1 Samuel 2:7 that the Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. These biblical verses indicate the fact that God raises both the rich and the poor. The Good News Bible (in giant print) expands this verse to mean the Lord makes some men poor and others rich; He humbles some and makes others great (1 Sam. 2:7). Deducing from these texts, we can come to some kind of understanding that further reflection on both sides of the arguments is fundamentally in demand for an in-depth illumination of how to live within the grace of the Living God.

The Biblical Guide To Wealth Health And Happiness

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Is there a "secret" formula in the Bible for personal wealth, health, and happiness? Is there an economic plan in the Bible for businesses, nations and the world to follow to ensure prosperity for its citizens? What does the Bible have to say about money and economics? The answers may surprise you. The Bible does have "secret" formulas for personal and national wealth. These formulas are "discovered" in this book. This book examines the economic thoughts, ideas, and philosophy of the Bible and elucidates how various biblical characters utilized these concepts to achieve unparalleled personal wealth. David and Solomon utilized the economic plan of the Bible to bring unprecedented wealth to the nation of ancient Israel. The transactions and economic principles used by the Patriarchs is examined in detail. The economic system proposed by Moses, intended for all nations and the world, is reviewed and its applicability for nations today is discussed. The book shows how Solomon and Ancient Israel achieved unprecedented prosperity, yet on Solomon's death the economy collapsed. The reasons for the prosperity and collapse are examined in detail. The book shows how the Persian Empire sunk the equivalent of over$1 Billion to form a Jewish State in Palestine. Yet, despite this, the Jewish State nearly failed. nehemiah, who some call the first turnaround manager, intervened and saved the state from extinction. The book also reveals the changes in these ideas and thoughts taught by Jesus Christ. Jesus used many specific coins of his day in his parables and teachings. In some cases, these teachings cannot be understood without understanding the role of the coins used in Jesus society. These parables are examined one by one in great detail to determine the exact meaning. The coins mentioned are illustrated and their role in the Judeo-Roman society of Jesus day is explained. The Bible mentions a millennium, a time when God will rule the earth. During this time the earth is prophesied to be very prosperous, with every person owning their own land and having an abundance of food, money, clothing, housing, and everything a human could want. What will the economic policies of Jesus government be to achieve this? These policies are clearly set forth in the Bible and are explained in this book. The Bible's "secret" formula for achieving personal wealth, health, and happiness has been hidden in plain sight for centuries. This book reveals this formula and shows how the reader can achieve personal wealth, health, and happiness by following the personal economic philosophy and guidelines of the Bible.
