In September 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the United Nations Development Summit to serve as a 15-year plan of action for all countries and people. The SDGs include 17 specific goals, and 169 associated targets that set out quantitative objectives across the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, all to be achieved by 2030. Health has been recognized as crucial for sustainable human development and an essential contributor to the economic growth of society. Beyond the goal to "ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages," many of the other SDGs include targets that are essential to address the environmental and social determinants of health. Considering this context, the Forum on Publicâ€"Private Partnerships for Global Health and Safety convened a workshop series to examine potential opportunities to engage the private sector and develop partnerships to advance health and the SDGs. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop series.

Over the last ten years, the financing and diversity of new players in the health industry have increased significantly. This provides both opportunities and challenges for health diplomacy to coordinate new partnerships and focus collectively on the results and impact on health. This edited volume defines and presents the range of innovative partnerships (including Global Health Initiatives, Private Foundations, Public/Private Partnerships, and the role of Civil Society) which are now near the heart of health diplomacy. It also describes the steps and negotiations used to integrate new players into development at the global level including the implementation of the new principles of aid effectiveness (as negotiated in the Paris Agenda and recent Accra Action Agenda). Lastly, the volume provides case studies at the country and community level to describe the diplomacy of including new health partnerships on the ground. The chapters represent unique and concrete perspectives on these issues from activists, private sector, country ministers of health, district health workers and multilaterals, including those working in these partnerships from the global level right down to the community level. This volume begins and concludes with important chapters on key themes and how the challenges and diversity of new actors can be incorporated to best improve global health.

Making Sense of Construction Improvement provides a critical evaluation of the construction improvement debate from the end of the Second World War through to the modern era. The book offers unique insights into the way the UK construction sector is continuously shaped and re-shaped in accordance with changes in the prevailing political economy. This second edition brings the book up to date by including coverage of key trends from 2010–2023. The book has been substantially revised and reworked to include new material relating to the ‘age of austerity’ and the subsequent period of political uncertainty initiated by the Brexit referendum. Changes in the political economy are positioned alongside the rise of the sustainability agenda and the advent of ‘zero carbon’. Particular attention is paid to the ongoing skills crisis and the over-hyped advocacy of modern methods of construction (MMC) as the latest supposed panacea of industry improvement. Coverage includes the Farmer (2016) report Modernise or Die and the Construction Playbook (HM Government, 2020). However, perhaps the most important addition is a focus on the Grenfell Disaster (2017) and the subsequent revelations from the public enquiry. Further intermediate milestones include Building a Safer Future (Hackitt, 2018) and the Construction Sector Deal (HM Government, 2018). The emerging consensus points towards a systemic failure involving not only the construction sector but also the entire system of regulation and compliance. Tracing the failings back over time and scrutinising the role played by previous generations of policymakers, Stuart Green ultimately argues that Grenfell was a disaster entirely foretold. The insightful and critical analysis of the industry contained within these pages is essential and timely reading for anyone who wants to understand how the construction sector arrived at where it is today, and with that knowledge, give further thought to where it might go next.

In February 2001 UNEP, in partnership with a variety of industry associations and organizations launched a reporting initiative to gauge progress by the private sector towards sustainable development. This effort contributes to the wider review of progress with the implementation of Agenda 21, under the framework of the World Summit on Sustainable Development. These volumes present sectoral reports on the progress towards sustainable development.
