BOOK EXCERPT:
The cross-disciplinary studies in this volume are of special interest because they link human purpose to the present debate between religion and the process of secularization. If that debate is to be a creative one, the notion of the 'human orderer' must be related significantly both to the sacred and secular realms. In fact, if man were not a purposive being, he would have neither religious nor secular problems. Questions about origins and destiny, divine purposiveness and the order of human development, would not arise as topics of human concern. It would appear, then, that few would deny the fact of man's purposiveness in existence, that the pursuit of these purposes constitutes the dramas of history and culture. Yet the case is otherwise. For, concerning 'purposes' itself, widely divergent, even antithetical, views have been held. The common man has mistrusted its guidance for purpose, much too often, 'changes its mind'. Its fluctuations and whimsical nature are too much even for common sense. The sciences have identified purpose with the personal life and viewed it as a function of the subject self. Consequently they had no need for it in scientific method and objective knowledge. The religions of the world have used purpose in its holistic sense, for purposes of establishing grandious systems of religious totality and for stating the ultimate goals in man's destiny.

BOOK EXCERPT:
One of the foremost philosophers of our time, Robert Nozick continues the Socratic tradition of investigation. This volume, which illustrates the originality, force, and scope of his work, also displays Nozick's trademark blending of extraordinary analytical rigor with intellectual playfulness. As such, Socratic Puzzles testifies to the great pleasure that both doing and reading philosophy can be. Comprising essays and philosophical fictions, classics and new work, the book ranges from Socrates to W. V. Quine, from the implications of an Israeli kibbutz to the flawed arguments of Ayn Rand. Nozick considers the figure of Socrates himself as well as the Socratic method (why is it a "method" of getting at the truth?). Many of these essays bring classic methods to bear on new questions about choice. How should you choose in a disconcerting situation ("Newcomb's Problem") when your decisions are completely predictable? Why do threats and not offers typically coerce our choices? How do we make moral judgments when we realize that our moral principles have exceptions? Other essays present new approaches to familiar intellectual puzzles, from the stress on simplicity in scientific hypotheses to the tendency of intellectuals to oppose capitalism. As up to date as the latest reflections on animal rights; as perennial as the essentials of aesthetic merit (doggerel by Isaac Newton goes to prove that changing our view of the world won't suffice); as whimsical as a look at how some philosophical problems might appear from God's point of view: these essays attest to the timeliness and timelessness of Nozick's thinking. With a personal introduction, in which Nozick discusses the origins, tools, and themes of his work, Socratic Puzzles demonstrates how philosophy can constitute a way of life.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Bar Code Puzzle By: W. E. Anderson For fifty years, an obvious message has been hidden in plain sight. This work reveals it. Within the Universal Product Code, the scannable code emblazoned upon nearly every product we use today, there is a discernible order to the numbers, though the original author of the code claimed it was arbitrary. This order shows numerical ties to mathematical formulae from the pyramids and numbers pertinent to Biblical prophecy. The Bar Code Puzzle proves these links, not through speculation, but rather through sound facts from the code itself. The connections are undeniable, and Anderson’s sobering insights are relevant to Christians and non-Christians alike. Regardless of a reader’s convictions, they will come away from this work with a new sense of wonder and a desire to reevaluate their beliefs.

BOOK EXCERPT:
With bracing clarity, James Elkins explores why images are taken to be more intricate and hard to describe in the twentieth century than they had been in any previous century. Why Are Our Pictures Puzzles? uses three models to understand the kinds of complex meaning that pictures are thought to possess: the affinity between the meanings of paintings and jigsaw-puzzles; the contemporary interest in ambiguity and 'levels of meaning'; and the penchant many have to interpret pictures by finding images hidden within them. Elkins explores a wide variety of examples, from the figures hidden in Renaissance paintings to Salvador Dali's paranoiac meditations on Millet's Angelus, from Persian miniature paintings to jigsaw-puzzles. He also examines some of the most vexed works in history, including Watteau's "meaningless" paintings, Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling, and Leonardo's Last Supper.

BOOK EXCERPT:
It is time to remember your purpose and who you really are. Ages and ages ago human spirits decided to come to planet Earth so that we could experience and appreciate the life that this 3-dimensional planet had to offer. We, as a group had agreed to uplift this planet in a very sacred way. It would be one that would bring God-consciousness to Earth’s level of vibration by blending Spirit into matter. Somewhere along the way we over-identified with the material world through its many physical pleasures and got stuck here in the life-death-reincarnation cycle normally taking place on planets with a 3-dimensional level of vibration. In essence, we have lost our way and our God-contentedness. We have simply forgotten who we are and why we came here in the first place. The Star Seeds Additionally, the human family currently on planet Earth is not homogeneous. Rather, it appears to be a mixture of star seeds from other planetary systems that were aware that our planet was going to go through a profound dimensional shift in consciousness at this point in time. These star seeds volunteered to forget who they are and where they came from. They were then born here as humans. As cosmic volunteers, they will help our planet go through its transformation into the Light. In order to achieve this, Star seeds were pre-coded to awaken to who they really are at this point in time as Beings of Light and love. Apparently, we have done this many times before with other planetary systems. We live to serve their many brothers and sister from the stars. Such is their love for us. The sole purpose behind the dimensional shift for planet Earth is to change it from a fear-driven planet to one whose alignment will be spiritual and based upon love. The shift will be irreversible and is estimated to intensify over the next 10 years. Those of us who choose a life of love will continue on with planet Earth and move into a higher dimension. These will be the Golden Years referred to in the prophecies. Earth is in the process of elevating in vibration. Accordingly, this process is known as ascension. The process of ascension involves many stages of initiations or tests. As each test is passed Consequently, the body or planet increases in vibration. This in turn, increases the vibration of the collective. All of Humanity, the dolphin and whale communities, plant, animal and mineral kingdoms are all well under way in their ascension process. Apart from the intention to ascend, there are a lot of personal issues and karma that will need to be addressed and worked through. As a result, those who decide to take this path must be prepared to take personal responsibility for themselves and their thoughts and behavior. It also means a gradual letting go of people, situations and lifestyles that we have come to take for granted in the 3rd dimension. Spiritual Ascension starts with the realization that most of humanity is operating in a waking unconscious state of being. Many are stuck in a cycle of reincarnation. In spite of this, there are many millions on the planet who are awakening for the purpose of moving toward spiritual enlightenment for the love of spirit. With this intention, they are awakening and questioning prior affirmation of beliefs as the veil of deception is being lifted. A Few of the topics presented are: ★Purpose of life ★The Awakening ★Ascension ★Ascended Masters ★Evolution of the Soul ★Reincarnation ★Emotions ★Chakras and the auric body ★Vibration and much more

BOOK EXCERPT:
As the old man lay dying, he told the visitor, I always wondered if my life made a difference in the life of another person. I also wondered what life meant to others if I had not ever lived. Did I just live or did I really love life. The Visitor is a book about the importance of life. It tells how one persons life touches the life of another person. There have been many times you have had a positive effect upon someone, and directly (or indirectly) influenced the outcome of their life. After reading The Visitor you will think about life (and death) differently. You will understand how your life has purpose, and just as important, has purpose in the life of another person. The Visitor is not about death and dying it is about life and living.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Freudian claim that dreams are meaningful and that their meanings can be discovered through dream interpretation has in recent times come under harsh attack from both scientific and hermeneutic-psychoanalytic circles. In a forceful response to these critiques, Rachel Blass demonstrates that while Freud and his followers have thus far failed to provide adequate justification for his dream theory, such justification may now be found through an alternate and legitimate—yet neglected—route, one that establishes both scientifically and philosophically the relationship between the self of the dreamer and that of the awake individual. The implications of this argument are both practical and theoretical: by providing sorely absent scientific and philosophical grounding to the very foundations of dream interpretation, the book clarifies and broadens the possibilities of dream interpretation within the clinical setting, and breaks new ground in the field of psychoanalytic epistemology and the philosophy of the human sciences.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Blending detailed contextual analysis with issues in modern-day international relations this book provides a major new analysis of the theory of Clausewitz and its relevance to contemporary society. This book argues that Clausewitz developed a wide-ranging political theory of war by reflecting on the success, the limitations, and the failure of Napoleon's method of waging war, a theory, which is still relevant in light of contemporary conflict. This new interpretation is the result of reflecting on Clausewitz's theory in light of the new developments and lays down the foundation of a general theory of war by concentrating on Clausewitz's historical analyses of war campaigns. For the first time analysis of three paradigmatic military campaigns is placed at the centre of understanding surrounding Clausewitz's 'On War': The author argues that the limitations of Napoleon's strategy, as revealed in Russia and in his final defeat, enabled Clausewitz to develop a general theory of war. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.
