The Wilmington Raleigh Rail Road Company 1833 1854

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In 1833, the Wilmington & Raleigh Rail Road Company set out to connect the port city of Wilmington to North Carolina's capital. When it was done in 1840, after changing its route, the company had completed 161 miles of track--the longest railroad in the world at the time--and provided continuous transportation from the town of Weldon on the Roanoke River to Wilmington and on to Charleston, South Carolina, by steamboat. A marvel of civil engineering by the standards of the day, the railroad constituted a tour de force of organization, finance and political will that risked the fortunes of individuals and the credit of the state. This study chronicles the project from its inception, exploring its impact on subsequent railroad development in North Carolina and its significance within the context of American railroad history as a whole.

Sir Walter Raleigh

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Sir Walter Raleigh was truly the Renaissance man of Elizabethan England: soldier and diplomat serving in the wars between Spain and England, courtier and Captain of the Queen's Guard in Elizabeth’s flamboyant court, explorer of a New World and colonizer of Virginia, member of Parliament and devotee of science, musician and literary patron, historian and poet. A dashing and complex figure, often in advance of his times and rebellious against them, Raleigh had the misfortune not simply to combine brilliance and versatility with arrogance and intolerance, but to live beyond the expansiveness of Elizabeth’s reign into the sober times of her successor, James Stewart. Knighted by the Queen, Raleigh enjoyed her favor until he was eclipsed by Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. Thereafter his fortunes fell, and he was finally imprisoned and tried by James I on grounds of treason. This book, conveying the excitement and flavor of Raleigh and his times, offers a new judgment of the man, and particularly of the famous trial that led to his imprisonment in the Tower and to his subsequent execution for treason. Mr. Wallace points out that, though the charges against Raleigh were questionable, the trial was legally just. On the other hand, the law itself, the court procedure, and the behavior of the prosecutor, Sir Edward Coke, were essentially unjust. After Raleigh’s death, jurists rallied to his defense, and changes in law and procedure were finally instituted. The trial thus has a historic importance not only in Raleigh’s life but also in English legal history. Originally published in 1959. Five Star Trails Raleigh And Durham

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Five-Star Trails: Raleigh and Durham is a guide to the best day-hiking trails within a two-hour drive of the urban areas of Raleigh and Durham. Raleigh is North Carolina’s capital and an anchor for the state's famous Research Triangle that includes Durham and Chapel Hill. Amid this metropolitan complex that also embraces Cary, Apex, and Wake Forest—home to more than 1.7 million people—the author leads readers to myriad places for scenic beauty, to sites of historic significance, and to neighborhoods that showcase the charms of urban life. All of the routes stay true to the book's "Five-Star Trails" title, based on the book series' rating system for scenery, trail condition, suitability for children, difficulty level, and solitude. To be selected for the book, each trail must truly shine in one or more of those areas while, at the same time, all of the trails combine to offer diversity for a wide range of hikers. Thus, this is the guidebook for a hiker seeking an arduous climb to a scenic overlook as much as it is for a weekend walker who wants an easy trail for his or her family.

Raleigh And Wake County Firefighting

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The story of firefighting in Raleigh and Wake County is almost as old as the county itself. The terrifying threat to wooden structures with minimal water supplies was well known to the planners who laid out Wake County's first town in 1792. Wide streets were created to prevent fires from spreading between buildings. As early as 1802, citizens contributed to the purchase price of Raleigh's first fire engine. More than 200 years later, the dedicated members of 23 fire departments answer the still-familiar cry of "fire!" Raleigh and Wake County Firefighting chronicles over a century of fire protection in North Carolina's capital city and surrounding county. Fire engines, fire stations, and the firefighters themselves are depicted in over 220 images culled from local newspapers, area archives, and personal collections. From Raleigh to Cary and Apex to Zebulon, both municipal and rural fire departments are remembered from their early beginnings. Stories of fires at Raleigh's Yarborough Hotel in 1928, downtown Knightdale in 1940, and Pullen Hall at North Carolina State University in 1965 come alive, as do dramatic photographs from the old Mangel's building fire, the North Raleigh tornado, and the flooding after Hurricane Fran.
