The Life And Death Of Mahatma Gandhi

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is the heroic story of the man whose non-violent movement transformed his native India both spiritually and politically as it impelled the nation along the road to independence. With consummate skill, in a narration that never flags in vividness and drama, Robert Payne re-creates Mahatma Gandhi both as a spiritual and historical force and as a living personality. When in January, l948, Gandhi was assassinated in Delhi by a fanatic, his death sent shock waves around the world. For two generations he had been the conscience of his country and the world. Planting the idea of non-violence firmly in men’s minds, he had not only conquered India but also changed the landscape of the human heart. In the tradition of his best-selling biographies of Lenin and Schweitzer, Robert Payne’s life brings Gandhi alive as a rounded personality. Beginning with the moving story of a shy, awkward boy from a provincial Indian city who married at Thirteen, then was separated from his bride for years while he read law in London, the book describes Gandhi’s life as a successful barrister in South Africa who turned his back on wealth to defend Indian settlers against discrimination and persecution. Robert Payne superbly describes Gandhi’s daring marches to aid the oppressed; his fasts and imprisonments; his historic achievements at international congresses and conferences in India and England where, clad only in shawl and loincloth, he met with prime ministers and viceroys and won their respect as he fought for the dignity and freedom of his people. “I would place Robert Payne’s book on the level of a great novel by Tolstoy, swiftly moving, panoramic, writ on the canvas of destiny and of close historical characterization,” writes Dr. Amiya Chakravarty, former private secretary of Rabindranath Tagore, who knew Gandhi personally and worked with him. “It is one of the great biographies. No finer account of Gandhi’s life and death has been written.”

The Internationally Acclaimed Biography of One of History’s Monumental Figures Gandhi: A Life The first biography of this important figure in over twenty years, Gandhi: A Life rescues the man from the myth, revealing the transformation of an ordinary, timid young man into a leader whose stand against a mighty empire brought millions together. "Until another Gandhi scholar comes along who digs deeper and can write more movingly, Gandhi scholarship will be well served by Chadha’s effort." — The Washington Post Book World "It is well-balanced, even-handed, and, like its subject, inspiring." —Kirkus Reviews "An engaging work worthy of a wide audience." —Library Journal "A sober, sensible, and notably fair account of this most quicksilver of personalities ... far from uncritical ... But on the whole he is approving, even reverential. Usually he convinces one that this is justified." — Daily Telegraph (London) "The first major biography to appear for twenty years ... [with] a depth and authority which others have lacked." —The Independent (London)

Indira Files A Critical Look At The Controversial Side Of Indira Gandhi

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

I have always felt that Indira Gandhi is the exceptional and foremost example of the dynastic politics of independent India. She is a perfect example of dynastic rule, on one hand, she is called the 'Iron Lady', on the other hand, people pay tribute to her dictatorship for imposing emergency in the country. Where on one hand Indira Gandhi carved her name in golden letters in Indian history by dividing Pakistan into two, on the contrary, she has also endured the slogans like Sanjay ki mummy, badi nikammi for blindly loving her son like Gandhari loved Duryodhana. Nonetheless, we cannot forget that it was Indira Gandhi who gave wings to India's strength and courage by conducting the Nuclear Test; however, she was also the Prime Minister for whom the High Court issued orders to be removed from her office. In fact, Indira Gandhi is merely a symbol of dynasty politics. The point here is to remind the young people that they cannot strive for ideal politics by idolising those who have flourished through family inheritance of post or position. In today's scenario, there are numerous political parties that operate under a single family's control. Although I hold great admiration for Indira Gandhi, however, her darker side is perhaps more prominent. Hence, I believe that young aspirants who are interested in politics can learn valuable lessons from this book on what not to do!
