Learners are always motivated; they just may not be motivated to learn the things you are wanting them to learn. Motivational Immediacy refers to the moment-by-moment motivation of learners during a learning event. This is in contrast to typical global views of motivation, and while casting a much heavier burden on the instructor, brings with it more deep, meaningful, and permanent learning. Since the early days of formalized large-scale testing, there have been efforts to understand learners in order to provide better aligned learning opportunities and accommodations. What has been less explored has been how prospective and current target learners are profiled as target groups to adapt the learning to them, both statically (such as in pre-learning biographical profiling) and dynamically (on-the-fly as they interact with learning contents in online learning systems). This work takes more of a micro-scale and meso-scale approach, and these often involve both formal and informal means and creative teaching-and-learning accommodations. After examining various kinds of resistance to learning, the book goes on to describe effective ways of overcoming resistance and engaging learners.Grounded in the literature of many fields, such as Adult Education, Psychology, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, and Communication (as well as the author’s own decades of experience), the book connects the concepts surrounding learning resistance directly to engagement and human motivation, drawing these ideas together to make the case for practicing motivational immediacy in all learning spaces. The second section of the book focuses on the various tools effective teachers might use to mitigate learner resistance and foster authentic and lasting engagement. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global concern that requires attention and creative solutions. Young people today will face the consequences of inaction and increased risks of AMR. The Quadripartite, which consists of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), strongly believes that young people can play an important role in bringing together wider society and stakeholder groups to tackle AMR. Young people, as agents of change, can raise awareness about AMR and advocate for local and global solutions. Youth were also identified as one of four priority target audiences during two global consultations on raising awareness about AMR, organized in 2022 by the Quadripartite. In response, the Quadripartite has developed this practical toolkit for engaging youth in AMR, based on consultations with young people themselves. The aim of this practical toolkit is to equip youth-led networks and youth-serving organizations with resources to engage young people in AMR communication, education and campaigns for awareness-raising, advocacy and behaviour change. The practical toolkit consists of 11 tools, a resource pack and case studies of good practices of youth engagement in the AMR response.
