Intellectual Property And Genetically Modified Organisms

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Taking a global viewpoint, this volume addresses issues arising from recent developments in the enduring and topical debates over Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and their relationship to Intellectual Property (IP). The work examines changing responses to the growing acceptance and prevalence of GMOs. Drawing together perspectives from several of the leading international scholars in this area, the contributions seek to break away from analysis of safety and regulation and examine the diversity of ways the law and GMOs have become entangled. This collection presents the start of a much broader engagement with GMOs and law. As GMO technology becomes increasingly more complex and embedded in our lives, this volume will be a useful resource in leading further discussion and debate about GMOs in academia, in government and among those working on future policy.

Ecology Of Salmonids In Estuaries Around The World

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

For centuries, biologists have marvelled at how anadromous salmonids – fish that pass from rivers into oceans and back again – survive as they migrate between these two very different environments. Yet, relatively little is understood about what happens to salmonid species (including salmon, steelhead, char, and trout) in the estuaries where they make this transition from fresh to salt water. This book explains the critical role estuaries play in salmonid survival. Ecology of Salmonids in Estuaries around the World synthesizes information from a vast array of literature, to describe the specific adaptation of eighteen anadromous salmonids in four genera (Hucho, Oncorhynchus, Salmo, and Salvelinus) explain the ecological relationships between anadromous salmonids, the fish they coexist with, and their estuarine habitat discuss key fitness elements salmonids need for survival (including those relating to osmoregulation, growth and feeding mechanisms, and biotic interactions) provide guidance on how to conduct estuarine sampling and scientific aspects of management and recovery plans offer directions for future research. The critical reference is further enhanced by extensive supplementary appendices that are available online, including data tables, additional references on estuarine salmonids, and a primer on estuaries and salmonids for citizen scientists.

The Atlantic Salmon

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Atlantic Salmon is a cultural icon throughout its North Atlantic range; it is the focus of probably the World’s highest profile recreational fishery and is the basis for one of the World’s largest aquaculture industries. Despite this, many wild stocks of salmon are in decline and underpinning this is a dearth of information on the nature and extent of population structuring and adaptive population differentiation, and its implications for species conservation. This important new book will go a long way to rectify this situation by providing a thorough review of the genetics of Atlantic salmon. Sponsored by the European Union and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, this book comprises the work of an international team of scientists, carefully integrated and edited to provide a landmark book of vital interest to all those working with Atlantic salmon.

Pollution Threat Of Heavy Metals In Aquatic Environments

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The role of the European Community in developing environmental legislation has focused the minds of pollution control agencies and industrialists on the need for, and the evidence to support, water quality standards. This is particularly so for the Dangerous Substances Directive which has led to European standards for cadmium, mercury and lindane. Additionally the United Kingdom has published standards for six other non-ferrous metals. In this book I have sought to review the aquatic toxicity information for these and other metals, not just by the collation of the results of all the published toxicity tests, but by the critical consideration of the test techniques. A surprising proportion of the reported toxicity studies for aquatic organisms are based on unsatisfactory chemical or biological methods. That such weaknesses persist at a time of limited resources for environmental research is disappointing, especially when sound metho dologies are extensively documented and widely published. Evaluation of the critically reviewed and vetted data indicates that many of the previously accepted generalisations about the toxicity of metals to aquatic life are invalid: for instance the assumption that salmonid species of fish are more susceptible to these metals than coarse fish, or that increased water hardness decreases toxicity. Too few studies have actually sought to test such hypotheses.

Antimicrobials And Agriculture

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Studies in the Agricultural and Food Sciences: Antimicrobials and Agriculture presents the benefits and disadvantages of antibiotics application in agriculture. It discusses the biochemical properties and bacteriological application of beta-lactamase inhibitors. It addresses the nitrification and nitrogen cycling in soils. Some of the topics covered in the book are the nitrification inhibition properties of etrodiazol; perturbations in soil activity caused by agrochemicals; effects of fungicides on soil populations; taxonomic implications of phytoalexin accumulation; fungal antagonism in relation to peaches; and aureofungin in plant disease control. The application of aureofungin in the control of downy and powdery mildew is fully covered. An in-depth account of the response of the udder to bacterial infection is provided. Bovine mastitis is an inflammation of the bovine mammary gland due to infectious and non-infectious causes. The effects of chemoprophylaxis in bovine mastitis are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the control of bacterial fish diseases by antimicrobial compounds. Another section focuses on the production of antibiotics using cutaneous bacteria. The book can provide useful information to farmers, animal breeders, students, and researchers.
