Exalting Jesus In The Sermon On The Mount

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is part of the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series. Edited by David Platt, Daniel L. Akin, and Tony Merida, this new commentary series, projected to be 48 volumes, takes a Christ-centered approach to expositing each book of the Bible. Rather than a verse-by-verse approach, the authors have crafted chapters that explain and apply key passages in their assigned Bible books. Readers will learn to see Christ in all aspects of Scripture, and they will be encouraged by the devotional nature of each exposition presented as sermons and divided into chapters that conclude with a “Reflect & Discuss” section, making this series ideal for small group study, personal devotion, and even sermon preparation. It’s not academic but rather presents an easy reading, practical and friendly commentary. The author of Exalting Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount is Daniel L. Akin.

The Sermon On The Mount And Human Flourishing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Sermon on the Mount, one of the most influential portions of the Bible, is the most studied and commented upon portion of the Christian Scriptures. Every Christian generation turns to it for insight and guidance. In this volume, a recognized expert on the Gospels shows that the Sermon on the Mount offers a clear window into understanding God's work in Christ. Jonathan Pennington provides a historical, theological, and literary commentary on the Sermon and explains how this text offers insight into God's plan for human flourishing. As Pennington explores the literary dimensions and theological themes of this famous passage, he situates the Sermon in dialogue with the Jewish and Greek virtue traditions and the philosophical-theological question of human flourishing. He also relates the Sermon's theological themes to contemporary issues such as ethics, philosophy, and economics.

The Vision Of Matthew

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In this volume Father Meier explores how Matthew remodeled the form, the Christological message, and the moral demand of the gospel. Part I shows Matthew's church in crisis. It was experiencing a shift in its Christian existence: from a narrow Jewish-Christian past to a universal Gentile future. To preserve yet reinterpret the particularistic traditions of that Jewish-Christian past, Matthew drew up a model of salvation history and then reshaped the gospel message to fit it. Part II offers a mini-commentary on the whole gospel to illustrate this reshaping of the message. Pericope by pericope, Matthew presents Jesus as Son of God and Son of Man, and therefore as 'the' definitive teacher of his Church. Indeed, the nexus between Christ and his Church emerges as the outstanding characteristic of Matthew's gospel. Part III studies Matthew's construction of a unified moral vision on the basis of this connection between Christ and Church. The basic stance of Jesus and his disciples towards the Mosaic Law is one of fulfillment - a 'prophetic' fulfillment which involves at times a deepening of, at times the abrogation of, the letter of the Law.

Thou Art The Christ

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John give four different views of the story of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Their accounts are compelling, but they give a fragmented and scattered view of Jesus’ life. In this devotional, the author pieces together the life of Jesus within these accounts, walking readers through His life chronologically. In the process, he seeks to answer questions such as: • What would a typical day with Jesus have included? • How did Christ interact with Scripture, especially messianic prophecies? • When did the plot to kill Jesus begin, and how extensive was it? • How many witnesses were there to the resurrection? The author also examines how Jesus was first recognized as the Messiah and declared as the Son of God, whether any court declared Him innocent, and what Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John’s insights tell us about Jesus and His teachings. Thou Art the Christ provides a nonbreaking narrative of Jesus’s life, connecting it to Old Testament prophecies about God’s promise to send the Messiah for the whole world for any whosoever believing him.

God Where Are You

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

"God, where are you?" is a question many of us ask, at many points in life - usually when we don't know what path to take, or where to turn in despair. In God, Where Are You? Carlos Mesters suggests that to answer this question we should turn to the place turned to again and again throughout history; the Bible itself. God, Where Are You? provides a way to approach the Bible as millions of ordinary people have, for many hundreds of years. Carlos Mesters suggests that the Bible can be considered the Christian family album, and its contents a guide for discovering who we are, where we came from, and - of course - where God is in our lives. Scholars may study and debate, argue and date, searching for the perfect answers to who wrote down which part of the Bible and when, but this is not the total of what the Bible is. God, Where Are You? shows that it is the people of the Bible, and the stories of how God touches them, that have the most to tell us. Mesters looks at the stories of Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses and the prophets, as well as the story of Job and the Psalms of David from the Hebrew Scriptures. Then, he turns to the Gospels, the Sermon on the Mount, the Parables, Miracles, and Life of Jesus. Throughout, he shows how the Bible, in speaking about people, also speaks about God being always, firmly, in their midst.
