BOOK EXCERPT:
Each year more than one million marriages end in divorce. Yet, despite the passage of the no-fault divorce laws over the past two decades, divorce has become more complex and expensive, and can be financially disastrous for wives of every age and economic condition. Today, divorce can mean a 73 percent drop in the woman’s standard of living while the husband’s rises 42 percent. In Getting Your Share, Lois Brenner, an expert matrimonial lawyer, shows women how to get financial security for themselves and their children under the current divorce laws. From choosing the right attorney to the final divorce decree and settlement, this book takes you step by step through the legal, tactical, emotional, and financial conflicts of divorce. You will learn about the opening legal moves, how to stop thinking of your husband as your partner, how to get an accurate picture of family assets, how to protect your children financially and psychologically, when to negotiate a settlement rather than go to trial, and much more. Whether you have been married two months or twenty years, have had a full-time career, have devoted yourself to raising children, or have done both, Getting Your Share provides information and understanding to guide you through this complicated crisis.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Canada is a rich country getting richer. But over the past 20 years, a huge portion of the country’s wealth increase has gone to a small handful of the super-rich. Canada’s one per cent have seen their share of Canada’s wealth grow by almost six times since 1999 to $2,203,000,000,000 USD today. Meanwhile, half of all Canadian families experience income insecurity and can’t get the support they need from ever-shrinking public services. Canada’s super-rich gained $76 billion during the 12 months after COVID-19 hit. Canadians are ready for measures that would distribute wealth more fairly, and give governments the funds to pay for pharmacare, improve long-term care, take serious climate action, implement paid sick leave and more. But the Liberal government took no serious measures in its 2021 budget to tackle this issue. Policy experts Jonathan Gauvin and Angella MacEwen show exactly how Canada’s wealth can be more fairly shared with measures that would impact only the one per cent: a wealth tax, higher taxes on the highest incomes, higher taxes on large corporations and higher taxes on big profits coming from capital gains. They also propose measures to shut down tax loopholes and tax havens and to tax web giants. This book shows how we can share the wealth so everyone will be better off — even the richest.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The economic recession and the rising healthcare costs experienced by many states in the U.S. is leading us towards the enactment of legislation that will reform the way that healthcare is provided and paid for within the individual states. TennCare was developed in Tennessee as a bold healthcare reform strategy that would simultaneously contain rapidly rising Medicaid costs while expanding insurance for a large, uninsured Tennessee population. The implementation of TennCare in January 1994 instituted the move of Tennessee's Medicaid patients into managed care health plans. This study describes the design, rationale, implementation strategy, and issues of the reform program, as well as offering in depth insight regarding the effects of the reform strategy on disproportionate share hospitals, i.e. hospitals that serve a large portion of Medicaid and uninsured patients. Data spanning ten years of pre- and post-Tenncare were analyzed to determine the effects of TennCare on the hospitals. Dr. Ogbonna provides a template for dealing with policy, managerial, and administrative issues of rising healthcare costs in Tennessee and the nation in general.
