As voice teachers, we should strive to help our students uncover their individual sound, and to facilitate technical consistency. Further, we as teachers should ultimately guide students to positive, independent, and emotionally engaged performances on stage - or in recordings. Some teaching approaches may guide students to these experiences – others may not. A successful outcome of vocal study occurs when the student no longer needs their teacher – they are independent and autonomous singers and musicians, and are able to teach themselves – or perhaps others. This study views the student-teacher relationship in the voice student through an existentialist lens influenced by the Sartrean principles of responsibility and freedom. The study examines some commonly used teaching approaches – viewing them from an historical perspective through the National schools in vocal instruction to more current approaches that may be commonly found in higher education teaching studios. This study offers a perspective that hopes to foster discussion, a re-examination of, and self-reflection in the teaching practices of higher education vocal instruction. The research is grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology. This paradigm was a means by which to unearth and uncover the lived experience of students undergoing vocal study. One that was guided by a framework of instruction influenced by the Sartrean notions of responsibility and freedom.

In 1517, Martin Luther took a stand for justification by faith alone in the finished work of Christ upon Calvary. As a result of his position, he suffered persecution for adhering to the Scriptures alone and not to traditions. This book traces my spiritual journey from legalism to freedom in Christ. In sixteen chapters, I map out my heritage within the Churches of Christ and the motivations that eventually led me out of bondage to liberty. One of the lengthiest chapters in this book is "Where the Scriptures Speak." One objective of this chapter is to help individuals to understand that one may speak where the Bible speaks and not necessarily speak as the Bible speaks. Chapters 11, 12, and 13 represent the very heart of my escape from authoritarianism to my dependence upon God's righteousness, a righteousness from God through faith in Jesus. Chapter 14 focuses on preaching in the early church. Without an understanding of the Gospel that the apostles proclaimed, Christians will never learn the spirit of toleration for differences within the Christian community. Chapters 8, 15, and 16 give attention to the Last Supper. The communion should be a constant reminder of the Cross and true unity among God's children. Chapter 1, 2, and 3 outline my original journey of faith. Dallas Burdette has been a serious student, teacher and preacher of the Bible for fifty-eight years, supporting himself for many years as an agent for AFLAC. He has written numerous articles for religious journals, as well as many essays and sermons which are available on his website. Freedom Faith is the first full-length critical study of Rev. Dr. Prathia Laura Ann Hall (1940-2002), an undersung leader in both the civil rights movement and African American theology. Freedom faith was the central concept of Hall's theology: the belief that God created humans to be free and assists and equips those who work for freedom. Hall rooted her work simultaneously in social justice, Christian practice, and womanist thought. Courtney Pace examines Hall's life and philosophy, particularly through the lens of her civil rights activism, her teaching career, and her ministry as a womanist preacher. Moving along the trajectory of Hall's life and civic service, Freedom Faith focuses on her intellectual and theological development and her radiating influence on such figures as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Marian Wright Edelman, and the early generations of womanist scholars. Hall was one of the first women ordained in the American Baptist Churches, USA, was the pastor of Mt. Sharon Baptist Church in Philadelphia, and in later life joined the faculty at the Boston University School of Theology as the Martin Luther King Chair in Social Ethics. In activism and ministry, Hall was a pioneer, fusing womanist thought with Christian ethics and visions of social justice.
