It is a great pleasure to present this book, edited by a distinguished team at the Hong Kong Institute of Education and with excellent contributors from nine countries in the region and beyond. The book is a truly comparative work which significantly advances conceptual understanding. The comparisons undertaken are at many levels and with different units for analysis. One chapter undertakes comparison in two cities (Hong Kong and Guangzhou), three chapters make comparisons between two eountries (South Korea and Singapore; Solomon Islands and Vanuatu; South Korea and China); and five chapters undertake eomparisons across the whole region. Other on individual countries or, in one case, on a single schoo!. In addition, ehapters foeus several chapters examine the attitudes and roles played by individuals and groups within societies. The book is thus an admirable example of the vitality of the field of comparative education in selecting different units for analysis and in examination of issues from diverse angles. Within the book, moreover, readers will find a fascinating array of settings and environments. On the one hand, for example, is Japan with its relatively homogenous eulture, a population of 126 million, and a strong national identity based on language and history. On the other hand is Solomon Islands, which has a population of just 400,000 scattered over 1,000 islands, approximately 90 indigenous languages, and major social problems arising from culture c\ashes, econornic forces, political dyna mies and legacies of colonialism.

This book is particularly timely in light of continuing international efforts to integrate Asia literacy into a national educational system where understanding of Asia – its languages, cultures, histories, and beliefs – is still at an emergent stage for a nation that is evolving into what George Megalogenis refers as ‘an Eurasian society’ (2015). The contributors to this collection range from the pioneers who created and developed the Asia literacy research space, to those who bring additional new theoretical insights through disciplines such as linguistics and ethnography. Their analysis has resulted in recommendations to develop a deeper understanding of working and living in diverse communities. The book also brings together theoretical perspectives on the current Australian socio-cultural and political context and how that can impact on pedagogical advancement in Asia literacy. The book argues for a broadening focus on what the outcomes Asia literacy in a global world can be for all Australians and offers counter narratives to the myth of a homogenous ‘White Australian culture’, to provide new ways of engaging with curriculum and pedagogy that transcend superficial awareness of multiculturalism to embrace realistic and reflective principles of global education.

Asian American voices and experiences are largely absent from elementary curricula. Asian Americans are an extraordinarily diverse group of people, yet are often viewed through stereotypical lenses: as Chinese or Japanese only, as recent immigrants who do not speak English, as exotic foreigners, or as a “model minority” who do well in school. This fundamental misperception of who Asian Americans are begins with young learners―often from what they learn, or do not learn, in school. Becker as Director of School Services for the Foreign Policy Association, New York City, in the 1960s. These scholars were honored with the Distinguished Global Scholar Award presented by the International Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies, the largest professional organization for social studies educators in the United States.
