The refereed proceedings of the 9th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, SSTD 2005, held in Angra dos Reis, Brazil in August 2005. The 24 revised full papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected from a total of 77 submissions. The book offers topical sections on query optimization and simulation, advanced query processing, spatial/temporal data streams, indexing schemes and structures, novel applications and real systems, moving objects and mobile environments.

The Seventh International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2001), held in Redondo Beach, CA, USA, July 12{15, 2001, brought together leading researchers and developers in the area of spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal databases to discuss the state of the art in spatial and temporal data management and applications, and to understand the challenges and - search directions in the advancing area of data management for moving objects. The symposium served as a forum for disseminating research in spatial and temporal data management, and for maximizing the interchange of knowledge among researchers from the established spatial and temporal database com- nities. The exchange of research ideas and results not only contributes to the academic arena, but also bene ts the user and commercial communities. SSTD 2001 was the seventh in the series of symposia that started in Santa Barbara a dozen years ago and has since been held every two years, in Zurich, Singapore, Portland (Maine), Berlin, and Hong Kong. By 1999, the series had become well established as the premier international forum devoted solely to spatial database management, and it was decided to extend the scope of the series to also cover temporal database management. This extended scope was chosen due, in part, to the increasing importance of research that considers spatial and temporal aspects jointly.

The refereed proceedings of the 10th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, SSTD 2007, held in Boston, MA, USA in July 2007. The 26 revised full papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected from a total of 76 submissions. The papers are classified in the following categories, each corresponding to a conference session: continuous monitoring, indexing and query processing, mining, aggregation and interpolation, semantics and modeling, privacy, uncertainty and approximation, streaming data, distributed systems, and spatial networks.

A summary of research carried out in the CHOROCHRONOS Project, established as an EC-funded Training and Mobility Research Network with the objective of studying the design, implementation, and application of spatio-temporal database management systems. The nine coherent chapters by leading research groups are written in a tutorial style, making the research contributions of the project accessible to a wider audience interested in spatio-temporal information processing. Following an introductory overview, the book presents chapters on ontologies for spatio-temporal databases, conceptual models, spatio-temporal models and languages, access methods and query processing, architectures and implementation of spatio-temporal DBMS, interactive spatio-temporal documents, and future perspectives.

Spatio-Temporal Databases explores recent trends in flexible querying and reasoning about time- and space-related information in databases. It shows how flexible querying enhances standard querying expressiveness in many different ways, with the aim of facilitating extraction of relevant data and information. Flexible spatial and temporal reasoning denotes qualitative reasoning about dynamic changes in the spatial domain, characterized by imprecision or uncertainty (or both). Many of the contributions focus on GIS, while some others are more general, or focus on related application fields, presenting theoretical viewpoints and techniques that are inspiring or can be adapted for GIS. The first part bundles the contributions on advances at the theoretical level, also discussing examples and opening further perspectives. The second part presents contributions on well-developed applications. The authors explain how to handle imprecision and uncertainty, demonstrating how advanced techniques can help to solve diverse problems related to GIS.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the International Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Database Management Systems, STDBM'99, held in Edinburgh, UK, in September 1999 as a satelite event of VLDB'99. The 13 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 30 papers submitted. The book offers topical sections on understanding and manipulating spatio-temporal data; integration, exchange, and visualization; query processing; index evaluation; and constraints and dependencies.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Spatial Databases, SSD'99, held in Hong Kong, China in July 1999. The 17 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 55 submissions. Also included are short papers corresponding to three invited talks and industrial applications presentations. The papers are organized in chapters on multi-resolution and scale, indexing, moving objects and spatio-temporal data, spatial mining and classification, spatial join, uncertainty and geological hypermaps, and industrial and visionary application track.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the International Workshop on Integrated Databases, Digital Images and GIS, ISD'99, held in Portland, Maine, USA in June 1999. The 18 revised full papers presented went through a double reviewing process and were selected from nearly 40 original submissions. The book is divided into parts on object extraction from raster images, geospatial analysis, formalisms and modeling, and data access.

Spatial Databases: Technologies, Techniques and Trends introduces the reader to the world of spatial databases, and related subtopics. The broad range of topics covered within the chapters includes spatial data modeling, indexing of spatial and spatiotemporal objects, data mining and knowledge discovery in spatial and spatiotemporal management issues and query processing for moving objects. The reader will be able to get in touch with several important research issues the research community is dealing with today. Covering fundamental aspects up to advanced material, Spatial Databases: Technologies, Techniques and Trends appeals to a broad computer science audience. Although perfect for specialists, each chapter is self contained, making it easy for non-specialists to grasp the main issues involved.

The International Workshop on Temporal Databases held in Zurich, Switzerland, 17-18 September 1995 brought together researchers from academic and industrial institutions with database practitioners interested in keeping up with the state-of-the-art developments in the management of temporal data. A previous workshop in Arlington, Texas in June 1993 focused on the development of an infrastructure that would spur the development of commercial implementations of many of the generally agreed-upon features of temporal database management that have emerged from the temporal database research community over more than a decade of research. This ARP AlNSF-sponsored Arlington workshop saw the formation of the TSQL2 Language Design Committee, which led to the development of the recently completed TSQL2 Language Specification, and also created a "consensus" glossary of temporal database terminology and a test suite of temporal database queries. The Zurich workshop was conceived from the outset to be universal in scope, and international in participation. The Call for Papers sought to evoke the highest quality and most up-to-date temporal database research from around the world. Mindful of the important work accomplished by the previous workshop, the Call also specifically sought out research papers and panels that would comment and build upon the widely publicized results from Arlington. These proceedings contain the papers that were selected for presentation at the International Workshop, on Temporal Databases held in Zurich, Switzerland on 17-18 September 1995.
