Stories From Home

BOOK EXCERPT:

Brimming with his rich humor, Jerry Clower's book manifests the unsurpassed southern art of yarn spinning. It also shows the nature of the man for whom good storytelling is more than just show business. Nashville's funniest man had a serious side. Deep in the merry heart of this comic entertainer were the codes and values that made him an esteemed humanitarian. He was named America's best country comic for nine years in a row and was called “the funniest American storyteller since Will Rogers” and “the Mouth of the Mighty Mississippi.” This boisterous, downhome man's loving, extroverted manner and his forthright display of positive feelings for others arose from the substance of sober, rock-solid regional values he gained from maturing in the rural South. Stories from Home embraces both sides of Jerry Clower, the funny man and the serious man, and shows his anecdotal humor in the mainstream of the South's great oral tradition of folktales and narratives. Jerry Clower’s hilarious stories about possum hunting, coon dogs, and the rambunctious Ledbetter clan were standards in his stage routines, videos, and albums. In Stories from Home many of his fans' favorite Clower tales are included. Here, too, is a long interview in which he explored his beliefs and tells how he gained firm convictions about race, religion, education, and family as well as an intolerance of negativism.

Telling Our Stories Of Home

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

What is home? The answer seems obvious. But Telling Our Stories of Home, an international collection of eleven plays by and about women from Lebanon, Haiti, Venezuela, Uganda, Palestine, Brazil, India, UK, and the US, complicates the answer. The "answer" includes stories as far-ranging as: enslaved women trying to create a home, one by any means necessary, and one in the ocean; siblings wrestling with their differing devotion to home after their mother's death; a family wrestling with the government's refusal to allow the burial of their soldier-son in their hometown; a young scholar attempting to feel at home after studying abroad; a young man fleeing home due to his sexual orientation only to discover the difficulty of creating home elsewhere, and Siddis (Indians of African descent) continuing to struggle for acceptance despite having lived in India for over 600 years. These are voices seldom represented to a larger audience. The plays and performance pieces range from 20 to 90-minute pieces and include a mix of monologue, duologue, and ensemble plays. Short yet powerful, they allow fantastic performance opportunities particularly in an age of social-distancing with flexible casts that together invite the theme of home to be performed and studied on the page. The plays include: The House by Arzé Khodr (Lebanon), Happy by Kia Corthron (US), The Blue of the Island by Évelyne Trouillot (Haiti), Nine Lives by Zodwa Nyoni (UK), Leaving, but Can't Let Go by Lupe Gehrenbeck (Venezuela), Questions of Home by Doreen Baingana (Uganda), On the Last Day of Spring by Fidaa Zidan (Palestine) Letting Go and Moving On by Louella Dizon San Juan (US), Antimemories of an Interrupted Trip by Aldri Anunciação (Brazil), So Goes We by Jacqueline E. Lawton (US), and Those Who Live Here, Those Who Live There by Geeta P. Siddi and Girija P. Siddi (India)

A method for families to share the biblical story at home and learn the practice of sharing one another’s stories as part of God’s Story. This book offers “storying” rituals and techniques from Godly Play for exploring the meaning of Christmas, Easter, Creation, the Parable of the Good Shepherd, Pentecost, and the Trinity to give sustenance to the family’s flow, play, love, and spirituality. This book describes the partial memoirs of Harald “Harry” Werner Shulten. It is partially about “escapism” – a basic component of the Human Psyche. Escapism into the protected shell of my home. It describes my attempts over many decades to work from home. My attempts didn’t always go well. In the ’70s, my parents owned two delicatessens, with a residence at the back. After that, I started teaching music from home. I then branched out into other areas – research, writing, consultancy, and whatever else I could find.

Home And Migrant Identity In Dialogical Life Stories Of Moroccan And Turkish Dutch

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In Home and Migrant Identity in Dialogical Life Stories of Moroccan and Turkish Dutch, Femke J. Stock explores the multivoiced life stories of Dutch adults of Moroccan and Turkish descent. Focusing on stories about ‘home’, this book deals with social relationships and being oneself, countries and houses, discrimination and Islamophobia, family and religion, and how these feature in personal narratives. Through microanalysis of case study material using Dialogical Self Theory, this book formulates and substantiates clear insights into descendants of migrants’ roots and routes, their sense of home, and their ambivalent processes of (dis)identification and belonging. Showing how religion plays a relatively marginal role in personal narratives, it provides an antidote to the widespread tendency to address and study Muslims almost exclusively in terms of their religious identity.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

MR. RABBIT AT HOME contains 24 stories and tales of Mr Rabbit, Blue Hen, Brother Wolf, Brother Lion, Mr. Thimblefinger, Chickamy Crany Crow, Sweet Susan, Woog and Weeze, Uncle Rain, Brother Drouth and so many more wonderfully enchanting characters woven together in a tapestry of America’s old South. There are also 25 full page pen-and-ink drawings by Oliver Herford sprinkled throughout which bring the stories to life. Some of the stories in this volume are: Where the Thunder lives How a King was Found The Magic Ring The Little Boy of the Lantern The King of the Clinkers How Brother Lion lost his Wool A Mountain of Gold The Rabbit and the Moon The Shoemaker who made but One Shoe The Woog and the Weeze The Fate of the Diddypawn, and more. Mr Rabbit At Home was written by Joel Chandler Harris in 1895, a full twelve years before he penned the tales of Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit. It could be said, therefore, that Mr Rabbit at Home was the book which sparked the idea for the consequent Brer Rabbit character and books. Just as the Brer Rabbit books are entertaining, so is Mr Rabbit at Home. Don’t be surprised that when you finish reading one of the many wonderful stories from this book, that you feel a tug at your sleeve with a coy request of “’nuther pleaaaaase?” Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton, Ga., on December 9, 1848. Deserted by his father at an early age, Harris dropped out of school and began working as a literary apprentice to help his mother make ends meet. Soon after, he was writing humorous pieces for several Georgia newspapers and in 1876, Harris joined the Staff of the Atlanta Constitution as an editor. Harris is best remembered for writing the Uncle Remus stories. Based on traditional African tales and folklore, the stories feature animal characters, such as Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox, who are endowed with human characteristics. Some of the Uncle Remus titles include Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings, Night with Uncle Remus, Uncle Remus and His Friends, and Uncle Remus and the Little Boy. After his death on July 3, 1908, Harris's home in Atlanta's West End was preserved as a museum called Wren's Nest. The museum got its name from a family of wrens that were found nesting in Harris's rickety old wooden mailbox. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book is donated to charities. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, animal stories, fables, folk tales, children’s Chickamy Crany Crow, books, parents with children, parents to be, grandparents, grandparents to be, animals, apple, astonish, baker, barbecue, Bear, beautiful, black, Brindle, Brother, Buster, castle, Chickamy, children, Clinkers, coal-black, companions, Crany, Crow, Diddypawn, dream, Drouth, Drusilla, eleven, Eolen, family, feathers, fingers, Fox, friends, Golden, Hen, hogshead, honeycomb, husband, island, Johnny, journey, Jumping-Off, King, kingdom, love at first sight, lady, lantern, leather, Lion, Looking-glass, mirror, , Majesty, Meadows, merchants, message, Monkeys, Moon, moral, mountains, nineteen, officers, palace, , Prince, Princess, Queen, Rabbit, Rain, ribbon, robbers, shoemaker, silver, Smat, snow-white, Sparkle, Spry, Stuff, Susan, Sweetest, tavern-keeper, landlord, , Thimblefinger, Tickle-My-Toes, Tiger, Uncle, Aunt, , wax, Wise, Wolf, woods, Woog, worth
