Anyone who has seen Maxwell Street has a story about Maxwell Street. You didn't have to shop there, work there, or eat there. You didn't have to be Jewish. You just had to go there, or merely pass-by, in order to experience something that stuck in your mind forever. Only a few blocks south of Chicago's downtown, Maxwell Street was predominately a Jewish enclave, but you could also hear the Blues, bargain with Gypsies, and find bargain hunters from all walks of life. This book focuses on the stories of the last Jewish generations that lived and worked in the Maxwell Street market area. Beginning in the late 19th century, it was there that thousands of Jewish immigrants first grasped the American dream. The descendents of those first Jewish peddlers absorbed the legacies left them; some went on to be among the most notable and successful personalities of the 20th century. On the Record by Christine Bacon and Noah Birksted-Breen circumnavigates the globe to bring true stories from six independent journalists, all linked by their determination to shed light on the truth. Pajarito Nuevo la Lleva: The Sounds of the Coup by María José Contreras Lorenzini focuses upon sense memories of witnesses who were children at the time of the 1974 military coup in Chile.

Walking around in a city and capturing the atmosphere with my camera has always fascinated me. I have never been able to get enough of humans relationship to urban space and to other people. Telling the story of a place through life on the spot. The pictures in this book tell stories as I have seen them. From Paris in July 1968, Copenhagen in August 1969 and Prague in October 1971. The pictures have been kept out of the way in my archive for many years. Now I have decided that they must come out in the light. In recent years, I have shown them in my photo gallery Vognporten in Rudkøbing and in "Art in the City" at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen (2012-2016), where there was great interest in them.
