BOOK EXCERPT:
Meet Fabio, a daydreaming mud beetle who's more interested in playing games with his friends than preparing for his future. Sara Risita, author of The Lightning Bugs Strike Back, introduces the game of soccer to the insect world in this tale of tiny bugs with big ambitions. Fabio, an Italian mud beetle, is tired of rolling mud balls, even though his mother nags that he will never find a girlfriend unless he can roll a perfect ball. When he chances on a human soccer match, an inspired Fabio flies back to tell his mud beetle friends about this cool game. What follows is an adventure of magnificent proportions when tarantulas, ants, wasps, fireflies, and many other fascinating insects join in and the Lightning Bug soccer team is formed. Not only do the mud beetles have fun playing soccer, but they also learn the value of good sportsmanship and discover the talent of making friends with those different from themselves. Moreover, in The Lightning Bugs Strike Back, the mud beetles realize that by working as a team, they can accomplish anything they set out to do.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In the late summer of 1862, after a series of victories culminating in the Union Armys rout at Second Manassas, General Lee and his commanders meet with President Davis and Secretary of State Judah Benjamin near that blood-soaked battleground to arrange a highly controversial and risky campaign for the fall. General Lee agrees to divide his Army of Northern Virginia by sending his most trusted general, Thomas Stonewall Jackson, to Kentucky with three Divisions by railcars to Knoxville, Tennessee. Jacksons Corps is ordered to march into Kentucky and meet with two other Confederate armies, those of Braxton Bragg and Kirby Smith, to secure that state for the Confederacy. In 1862 The Confederates Strike Back, author Kevin Carroll offers a fictional work of military history that envisions what might have happened if commanders at the time had made other choices. The story journeys through a series of hypothetical historical events once the Battle of Second Manassas is complete. Laced with military strategy, tactical maneuvering, and unforeseen complications caused by the fog of war, 1862 The Confederates Strike Back is complete with details on orders of battle that were accurate in late summer of 1862. It presents a realistic and plausible alternative to the historical events as they occurred. Can General Lee hold on and buy the time Jackson needs to complete his mission and return to Virginia? Will the risky strategy backfire on the South? Will the Confederacy achieve Independence?

BOOK EXCERPT:
During 1938 and 1939, Paul Neurath was a Jewish political prisoner in the concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald. He owed his survival to a temporary Nazi policy allowing release of prisoners who were willing to go into exile and the help of friends on the outside who helped him obtain a visa. He fled to Sweden before coming to the United States in 1941. In 1943, he completed The Society of Terror, based on his experiences in Dachau and Buchenwald. He embarked on a long career teaching sociology and statistics at universities in the United States and later in Vienna until his death in September 2001. After liberation, the horrific images of the extermination camps abounded from Dachau, Buchenwald, and other places. Neurath's chillingly factual discussion of his experience as an inmate and his astute observations of the conditions and the social structures in Dachau and Buchenwald captivate the reader, not only because of their authenticity, but also because of the work's proximity to the events and the absence of influence of later interpretations. His account is unique also because of the exceptional links Neurath establishes between personal experience and theoretical reflection, the persistent oscillation between the distanced and sober view of the scientist and that of the prisoner.
