BOOK EXCERPT:
This is a work of poetic reflections, on the world, Self, and Reality. In short, these are mystical poems. They are offered to all people, irrespective of their race, caste, creed, color, and gender, thereby hoping to persuade all people to engage in the quest for self-knowledge and hence of ultimate reality. The main goal and purpose of these poems is to enable every reader to attain transcendence. Even if this work is moderately successful in this endeavor, the author will have been more than rewarded. The author greatly appreciates all the scientists, philosophers, and religious thinkers, who so generously gave their time and talent to read these poems and give their most valuable suggestions and reflections. These are not ordinary poems, but those requiring deep thought and introspection. All people who are in quest of their true Self will find these poems most rewarding. The author is most grateful to Professor Arthur Herman, a great Sanskritist and Indic thinker, for deeming this work worthy of his Foreword.

In any climate and on any continent you can grow beautiful, fresh vegetables in environments where no food has grown before. In Straw Bale Solutions, you will find over two dozen stories of Straw Bale Gardens that inspire as much as they educate. You will recognize in them many of the challenges any gardener faces, and you will see how you can use the experiences of others to write your own Straw Bale Gardening success story. In backyards and all across the world, Straw Bale Gardening (SPG) is making an impact. Since he created Straw Bale Gardening in his home in the Midwestern US, author Joel Karsten has talked to thousands of gardeners and traveled to dozens of countries to spread the SBG word. Here, in Joel’s own words, is a collection of fascinating illustrated stories that you can enjoy and learn from. For example: Cambodian SBGs grow food during Monsoon season—for the first time SBGs sprout fresh veggies in the rocky Swiss Alps A community garden in New Jersey turns an EPA site into a food haven An SBG in the lowlands of the Netherlands rises above constant floods And many more stories of SBG success that have lessons just for you

BOOK EXCERPT:
Historians have traditionally neglected relationships between slave men and women during the antebellum period. In Chains of Love, historian Emily West remedies this situation by investigating the social and cultural history of slave relationships in the very heart of the South. Focusing on South Carolina, West deals directly with the most intimate areas of the slave experience including courtship, love and affection between spouses, the abuse of slave women by white men, and the devastating consequences of forced separations. Slaves fought these separations through cross-gender bonding and cross-plantation marriages, illustrating West's thesis about slave marriage as a fierce source of resistance to the oppression of slavery in general. Making expert use of sources such as the Works Progress Administration narratives, slave autobiographies, slave owner records, and church records, this book-length study is the first to focus on the primacy of spousal support as a means for facing oppression. Chains of Love provides telling insights into the nature of the slave family that emerged from these tensions, celebrates its strength, and reveals new dimensions to the slaves' struggle for freedom.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In times where the very concept of ‘nature’ is questioned not only in its philosophical dimension, but in the core of its biological materiality, we need to reconsider the interrelations between architecture and nature. This not only applies to strategies on environmental responsibility but equally on anticipatory human behavior and cultural or demographic variety. To address these challenges this book proposes to embrace the unknown and cultivate the architectural discipline towards an integrated and cross-disciplinary practice. It unravels compelling innovative and forward-thinking design narratives by leading international practitioners and researchers who investigate novel associations between architecture, nature and humanity for a future, alive architecture. Structured around the three closely cross-linked core themes “bioinspiration”, “materiability”, and “intelligence” the book engages with the starting point of an emerging new design field, where the symbiosis of physics, biology, computing and design promises the redefinition of what we call architecture today.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Overwriting the Dictator is literary study of life writing and dictatorship in Americas. Its focus is women who have attempted to rewrite, or overwrite, discourses of womanhood and nationalism in the dictatorships of their nations of origin. The project covers five 20th century autocratic governments: the totalitarianism of Rafael Trujillo’s regime in the Dominican Republic, the dynasty of the Somoza family in Nicaragua, the charismatic, yet polemical impact of Juan and Eva Perón on the proletariat of Argentina, the controversial rule of Fidel Castro following Cuba’s 1959 revolution, and Augusto Pinochet’s coup d'état that transformed Chile into a police state. Each chapter traces emerging patterns of experimentation with autobiographical form and determines how specific autocratic methods of control suppress certain methods of self-representation and enable others. The book foregrounds ways in which women’s self-representation produces a counter-narrative that critiques and undermines dictatorial power with the depiction of women as self-aware, resisting subjects engaged in repositioning their gendered narratives of national identity.
