Angels and demons are real, and they are fighting for your soul as you read this. An angel named Artemas awakens in heaven to find Mishael, a principality angel, standing by. He quickly begins to explain where she is and what she must begin to do. Heaven captivates the attention of Artemas, often causing her mind to wander off during training. Mishael immediately understands that keeping this trainee focused isn't going to be easy. Artemas is tasked with assisting humans to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. She is delighted at the opportunity. However, once she leaves heaven's atmosphere, she is exposed to the army of darkness. Fierce battles between angels and demons rage constantly around her while she accompanies Mishael for some serious on-the-job training. Mishael and Artemas witness a woman named Ethel Poirier being saved. This serves as an example of the final step in every assignment Artemas is given. Artemas is then taken to her first assignment, Dustin Stillwell. After many bad experiences in his life, Dustin is addicted to pain medication, selling drugs, and has turned away from God completely. In learning that Dustin has three days left to live, Artemas frantically begins to battle for his soul against the demons trying to take it for themselves. She finds out just how difficult it can be to steer the human heart back to God after so much time is spent away from Him. Using her heavenly powers and the mentorship of Mishael, Artemas gets to work. At times, Artemas feels overwhelmed by the complexities of her assignment--raging heavenly battles, constant demon attacks, the obliviousness of humans, and of learning all about herself. Will she be able to save Dustin's poor soul? Or will he be lost to the darkness?

BOOK EXCERPT:
A powerful novel of a man and a woman from different worlds whose passion binds them together even as it tears them apart—from the bestselling author of When Venus Fell and A Place to Call Home There had always been MacKenzies and Colebrooks at Blue Willow, their histories entangled like the graceful branches of the rare willow trees that thrived there. Artemas Colebrook and Lily MacKenzie shared more than that history, their souls bound to each other and to the land the day the boy held tiny Lily minutes after her birth. But the tragedy that has brought Lily back to the small farm where she spent her childhood has also made Artemas’s brothers and sisters her bitter enemies. Torn between family loyalties and their shared sense of destiny, Artemas and Lily must come to terms with a childhood devotion that has turned to bittersweet desire, a passion that could destroy all they have struggled for—even Blue Willow itself. Praise for Blue Willow “Smith knows how to generate genuine emotion.”—Publishers Weekly “Smith [is] a remarkably talented prolific storyteller who creates unforgettable characters.”—Booklist “A moving journey into the heart and soul of enduring love.”—Julie Garwood

BOOK EXCERPT:
In a world obsessed with the virtual, tangible things are once again making history. Tangible Things invites readers to look closely at the things around them, ordinary things like the food on their plate and extraordinary things like the transit of planets across the sky. It argues that almost any material thing, when examined closely, can be a link between present and past. The authors of this book pulled an astonishing array of materials out of storage--from a pencil manufactured by Henry David Thoreau to a bracelet made from iridescent beetles--in a wide range of Harvard University collections to mount an innovative exhibition alongside a new general education course. The exhibition challenged the rigid distinctions between history, anthropology, science, and the arts. It showed that object-centered inquiry inevitably leads to a questioning of categories within and beyond history. Tangible Things is both an introduction to the range and scope of Harvard's remarkable collections and an invitation to reassess collections of all sorts, including those that reside in the bottom drawers or attics of people's houses. It interrogates the nineteenth-century categories that still divide art museums from science museums and historical collections from anthropological displays and that assume history is made only from written documents. Although it builds on a larger discussion among specialists, it makes its arguments through case studies, hoping to simultaneously entertain and inspire. The twenty case studies take us from the Galapagos Islands to India and from a third-century Egyptian papyrus fragment to a board game based on the twentieth-century comic strip "Dagwood and Blondie." A companion website catalogs the more than two hundred objects in the original exhibition and suggests ways in which the principles outlined in the book might change the way people understand the tangible things that surround them.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is a collection of scholarly studies in the history of mathematics education, very abbreviated versions of which were presented at the ICMI Congress in 2021. The book discusses issues in education in Brazil and Belgium, in Poland and Spain, in Russia and the United States. Probably the main factor that unifies the chapters of the book is their attention to key moments in the formation of the field of mathematics education. Topics discussed in the book include the formation and development of mathematics education for women; the role of the research mathematician in the formation of standards for writing textbooks; the formation of curricula and the most active figures in this formation during the New Math period; the formation of certain distinctive features of curricula in Poland; the formation of the views of David Eugene Smith and the influence of European mathematics education on him; the formation of the American mathematics community; and the creation of such forms of student assessment as entrance exams to higher educational institutions. The book is of interest not only to historians of mathematics education, but also to wide segments of specialists in other areas of mathematics education.

Throughout history, people have been intrigued with spirits, angels, or devas as sources of wisdom and guidance. They are not only interesting as those who possess an insight into events and circumstances, but also as proof of life after death. In this clear and useful reference guide, Bjorling presents a listing of the literature on the various ways in which people of different cultures have consulted spirits—through shamans and oracles, magic, mediums, Voodoo, and psychics. Each chapter contains a general introduction to the respective topic as well as a listing of pertinent books, articles, and dissertations. His survey also includes early spirit contacts in Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
