The events which make up the first volume of the History of the Church moved forward from the back ground of successive dispensations of the Gospel which preceded the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. That volume covered the period from the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 1805, to the close of the year 1833, and included as its chief events: the birth of the Prophet; his first vision of the father and the Son; the coming forth of the Book of Mormon; the organization of the Church, April 6th, 1830; the mission to the Lamanites; the gathering of the people from the state of New York, first to Kirtland, Ohio, and subsequently the gathering of many of them to Jackson county, Missouri; the location of the site of the future city of Zion and its temple; the introduction of the doctrine of consecration and stewardship; the experience of the Elders of Israel in their movements back and forth between Kirtland and Zion; the spread of the work throughout the states of the American Union and Canada; the Prophet's own mission to the latter place; the founding of the first Church periodical, The Evening and Morning Star; the selection of a number of the revelations of God for publication under the title, "The Book of Commandments;" the establishment of the Mercantile and Literary firms of Zion and Kirtland; the laying of the corner stones of the Kirtland Temple; the planting of a number of settlements in Jackson county, Missouri; the awakening jealousy of the old settlers against the more progressive Saints; the fanning of these flames of jealousy by sectarian priests; the rise of that religio-political persecution which culminated in the terrible suffering of the Saints—the destruction of their printing establishment, the burning of their homes, their final expulsion from Jackson county; also the negotiations between the Saints and the civil authorities of the state of Missouri for reinstatement of the exiles upon their lands. The first volume closed with the narration of these circumstances of discouragement which befell the Saints in their efforts to establish Zion in Missouri.

History of Joseph Smith, the Prophet and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a semi-official history of the early Latter Day Saint movement during the lifetime of founder Joseph Smith. It is largely composed of Smith's writings and interpretations and editorial comments by Smith's secretaries, scribes, and after Smith's death, historians of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The history was written between 1839 and 1856. It was later published in its entirety with extensive annotations and edits by B. H. Roberts as History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first six volumes of this work cover the "History of Joseph Smith" from his birth in 1805 to his death in 1844. Volume seven covers the material from immediately after Smith's death in June 1844 until the church's first general conference in Salt Lake City. This collection of essays, sermons, and prayers urges the church today to be the sort of community that sustains a vigorous and continuing conversation within itself as to who has called it into being, to whom it is responsible, and what it is called to be and to do. Jones reminds the church that it is an alternative political community called into being by the Gospel. This collection explores what it means to be such an alternative community in tumultuous times, in times when it is tempting to look to the world for answers, and to confuse loyalty to the nation-state with loyalty to God. A theme throughout all the writings is that the church is the necessary context for becoming and being a Christian.

The first section of the trilogy deals with epistemology. The approaches to determine what is true in the author’s religion and science use are discussed, and shown to be somewhat similar. The fundamental beliefs of both religion and science are based on metaphysical assumptions that cannot be proven true with empirical evidence. In the second part of the trilogy, seven essential metaphysical assumptions of the author’s faith are discussed. They are shown to be reasonable beliefs based on respected theories of quantum physics, relativity, the big bang, superstrings, evolution, psychology, geology and anthropology. The third section of the trilogy deals with beliefs about the creation of the earth. Each of the seven days of the creation story in Genesis are reinterpreted based on the finding of science, and beliefs of the LDS Church. This includes a form of evolution and pre-Adamic man. It is consistent with the writer's religious faith.

This is one of the saddest pictures in all the Bible. Jesus Christ is outside of the professing church pleading for entrance. The strict interpretation of this passage is, "Behold, I have taken my stand at the door, and am knocking." This is an activity going on today. He continues knocking, for sorted out Christendom is in numerous quarters energized with a same soul that characterized the husbandmen in the story of Luke 20:9-18. By and by we see where men have assumed control or taken over what rightly belongs to God. A equally heart-searching message is here also for the individual Christian. This tender but delicate request isn't expressed in the voice of the Judge of Revelation 20, yet originates from our High Priest's heart of love for His blood-bought people. Jesus needs to impart the best of paradise's endowments to His own. The steadiness of this love is confirmed or evidenced by the fact, as we have noted previously, that He continues knocking. Is it accurate to say that we are among the individuals who have received salvation from Him but then have defied and rebelled surrendering our everything to Him? Instead of His finding an open heart, would he say he is stood up to with a closed door? Having readily acknowledged discharge (release) from wrongdoing's (sin's) guilt and embraced the assurance of paradise, would we say we are yet rejecting or refusing Him access to various areas of our regular day to day lives? He wants to share with us glories far above anything we could ask or think; but the latch is on our side of the door; He won't force His benefits on any of us. He promises to come in and sup with us. Of this Ottman has expressed: "A dinner is a night supper, it is the last taken before the morning breaks and the day first lights. It is since a long time ago the apostle stated, "The night is far spent, the day is at hand'; to sup with Christ before morning breaks is a foretaste of the coming glory...of heaven." The time is growing short, and by keeping Him on the outside we are presently missing the best He has for us. Let us make a full and happy surrender to Him. We will find as John expressed in his first epistle: "Truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ."
