This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Distributed Computing, DISC 2000, held in Toledo, Spain in October 2000. The 23 revised full papers presented together with one invited contribution were carefully reviewed and selected from more than 100 submissions. The papers address a variety of current issues in distributed computing including mutual exclusion, distributed algorithms, protocols, approximation algorithms, distributed cooperation, electronic commerce, self-stabilizing algorithms, lower bounds, networking, broadcasting, Internet services, interconnection networks, distributed objects, CORBA, etc.

The Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill aims to establish a more resilient, stable and competitive banking sector; to reduce the severity of a future financial crisis; and to protect taxpayers in the event of such a crisis. It is primarily an enabling Bill, which provides HM Treasury with the requisite powers to implement the policy underlying the Bill through secondary legislation. Three illustrative draft instruments were published in March 2013 in order to aid Parliamentary scrutiny of the Bill, and the Government has continued to develop those instruments. This paper invites comments on a further four statutory instruments: Ring-fenced Bodies and Core Activities Order; Excluded Activities and Prohibitions Order; Banking reform (Loss Absorbency Requirement) Order; and the Fees and Prescribed International Organisations Regulations. Further secondary legislation is planned for pensions and building societies.

This book has grown out of our shared experience in the development of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL), based on the electron-positron storage ring SPEAR at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) starting in Summer, 1973. The immense potential of the photon beam from SPEAR became obvious as soon as experiments using the beam started to run in May, 1974. The rapid growth of interest in using the beam since that time and the growth of other facilities using high-energy storage rings (see Chapters 1 and 3) demonstrates how the users of this source of radiation are finding applications in an increasingly wide variety of fields of science and technology. In assembling the list of authors for this book, we have tried to cover as many of the applications of synchrotron radiation, both realized already or in the process of realization, as we can. Inevitably, there are omissions both through lack of space and because many projects are at an early stage. We thank the authors for their efforts and cooperation in producing what we believe is the most comprehensive treatment of synchrotron radiation research to date.
