First published in 1989. The Journal of Development Studies was founded 25 years ago as a professional journal for what had by then become an established sub-discipline within British social science. The Journal has consistently published a broad spectrum of British research on development studies - a catholicity that has been reflected in the composition of the Editorial Board over the years - and has always welcomed authors from the USA, the European Continent, and above all from the Third World. Collated form the last twenty-five years of the journal presented here are a collection of 20-odd papers that represent less than three per cent of articles published since 1964.

The Volumes Cover An Extensive Range Of Critical Areas That Have One Common Theme Of Questioning The Accepted Parameters Of Development From Different Angles Influenced By Multiple Academic Backgrounds. An Attempt Has Been Made To Accommodate Conflicting Points Of View That Would Facilitate The Reader To Arrive At His/Her Own Understanding Of The Problems Under Purview. Contributors To These Volumes Have Tried To Argue The Different Issues And Concerns Of Development Paradigms. Paul Streeten is recognised as one of the profession's most eminent authorities on economic development. In these lectures he provides a major statement on his approach to the development problem, stressing that human development, not simply income growth, should be the focus of all strategies to eradicate hunger and poverty in the world. His argument assigns an important role to reformed government - both in providing social services and in facilitating the functioning of markets - in opposition to the prevailing idea that minimal government is more often than not the optimal solution. The role of small and larger firms, institutions, central and local government is also carefully examined. COVID-19 has resulted in drastic socio-political and economical changes on a global scale. On an individual level, the pandemic has significantly changed the lifestyle and personal values of millions of people. It can be argued that COVID-19 was a result of humans living in an anthropocentric way, in which humans are at the top of the hierarchy. The impact and spread of COVID-19 have forced us to face our affective relationship with the environment from a Biocentric perspective, rather than an anthropocentric perspective. The Biocentric perspective encourages us to reflect on the meaning of values of our social integration and emphasizes the importance of a sustainable affective interaction with nature. To improve human capacity of coping with crises like COVID-19 in the future, it would be important that we develop biocentric education and reinforce lifestyles that promote sustainability

The technology revolution has made it critical for all children to understand science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) or risk being left behind. Sustainability policies shape the ways that society and the economy interact with the environment, natural resources and ecosystems, and address issues such as water, energy and food security, and climate change. These policies are complex and are, at times, obscured by contestation, uncertainty and sometimes ignorance. Ultimately, sustainability problems are social problems and they need to be addressed through social and policy change.
