A CHURCH OF MODERN MORALITITES! In the city of Adamsport, Massachusetts—very similar to Quincy, where Bob Rimmer has lived most of his life—Matt Godwin, with both an MBA and a Doctor of Divinity degree from Harvard—after fifteen years in the business world, is about to be elected president of a multi billion dollar conglomerate created by his father. But defying both his wife and his father, Matt returns to the Unitarian/Universalist pulpit. He has a vision of a church that offers an entirely new approach to Christian morality. Inspired by the never ending mystery and wonder of procreation, life and death, his religion will preach the exaltation of the human body and mind—and human sexuality will have a joyous, laughing, sacramental quality. Matt's religious humanism is portrayed amidst a background of obsession and adventure. Attempting to build a new style church. Matt's need for funds, leads him on a search for millions of dollars in gold bullion dumped by an American transport plane during World War II in the Himalayas, when we were at war with the Japanese. With the help of an Islamic, Arab oil billionaire he rebuilds and recreates a former Unitarian Universalist church and offers a sexual religious agenda that shocks the conservative Christian community. Originally published in 1985—Bob Rimmer has elaborated the Church of Modern Moralities with a new, 21st century, franchised religion in his novel, —published by toExcel in 1998. It's called Wondering and has churches called Love Dromes. Don't miss it! After you've read it, you'll become a Wonderer, too!

Honouring And Admiring The Immoral

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Is it appropriate to honour and admire people who have created great works of art, made important intellectual contributions, performed great sporting feats, or shaped the history of a nation if those people have also acted immorally? This book provides a philosophical investigation of this important and timely question. The authors draw on the latest research from ethics, value theory, philosophy of emotion, social philosophy, and social psychology to develop and substantiate arguments that have been made in the public debates about this issue. They offer a detailed analysis of the nature and ethics of honour and admiration, and present reasons both in favour and against honouring and admiring the immoral. They also take on the important matter of whether we can separate the achievements of public figures from their immoral behaviour. Ultimately, the authors reject a “onesize-fits-all” approach and argue that we must weigh up the reasons for and against honouring and admiring in each particular case. Honouring and Admiring the Immoral is written in an accessible style that shows how philosophy can engage with public debates about important ethical issues. It will be of interest to scholars and students working in moral philosophy, philosophy of emotion, and social philosophy.

The Immoral Road Not Taken

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A series of studies supported the hypotheses that (H1) reflecting on immoral alternatives to one's past behavior can license one to act less virtuously in the future, and that (H2) the motivation to feel or appear virtuous can lead one to invent immoral alternatives to one's past behavior. Supporting H1, when White participants performed a behavior that did vs. did not have a racist alternative, they felt that they had obtained evidence of their morality (Pilot Study), they expressed less racial sensitivity (Study 1), and, if they had relatively prejudiced racial attitudes, they were more likely to state a preference for hiring Whites instead of Blacks for a particular job (Study 2). Supporting H2, when White participants were motivated to feel non-racist, they remembered a prior task as having afforded more racist alternatives to their behavior (Studies 3-5). Additional support was obtained in the domain of weight-loss. In support of H1, reflecting on unhealthy alternatives to their recent behavior licensed participants to express weaker intentions to pursue their weight-loss goals (Study 6), and, if they habitually placed little restraint on their eating, to consume more of an unhealthy food (Study 7). Supporting H2, the desire to eat an unhealthy food without compunction led participants to construe alternatives to their prior food choices as having been unhealthier (Study 8). Discussion focuses on moral behavior, self-control, identity concerns, and the motivated rewriting of one's moral history.

This Immoral Trade New Edition

BOOK EXCERPT:

Slavery remains rampant worldwide. At least 27 million men, women, and children are enslaved today, ranging from prostitutes in London to indentured workers in Burma. This book tells some of their stories. -The statistics of modern day slavery are shocking,- writes Baroness Cox. -Behind each statistic is a human being ' a man, woman, or child; and behind each human being is a family and a community which have been devastated or destroyed. As real-life experiences often speak louder than words, we introduce some of the hundreds of former slaves we have met personally.- The picture is changing rapidly: there are grounds for optimism, but also fresh concern. This popularly written but carefully researched volume has been fully updated for this new edition. It includes chapters on the causes of slavery, on the history of the practice, on different forms of contemporary slavery and truly shocking case studies from Sudan, Burma, Uganda, Indonesia, and the UK. Dr Lydia Tanner contributes a new chapter on human trafficking, and Mal Egner provides a chapter on the conditions endured by the Dalits of India. Former slave and South Sudanese Olympic athlete, Guor Marial, writes the foreword.

Life S Satisfying The Need Of The Immoral

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Every human being has a need related to his or her condition. In his Gospel, John presents nine cases that represent the various conditions and needs of human beings in order to illustrate that Jesus Christ as life fully meets the need of man's every case. In this booklet taken from Life-study of John, Witness Lee presents the second of these nine cases, the case of the Samaritan woman in John 4. The case of the Samaritan woman illustrates the second need of all mankind—the need for satisfaction. At some point, regardless of our success or attainments, we all have had the feeling of being empty, and this emptiness, this sense of dissatisfaction, corresponds to the Samaritan woman's situation. However, just as Christ as life was able to meet the need of Nicodemus in John 3, so also is it able to meet the need presented in John 4. Thus, to the Samaritan woman, the Lord Jesus unveiled life’s satisfying.
