Jugaad Time

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In India, the practice of jugaad—finding workarounds or hacks to solve problems—emerged out of subaltern strategies of negotiating poverty, discrimination, and violence but is now celebrated in management literature as a disruptive innovation. In Jugaad Time Amit S. Rai explores how jugaad operates within contemporary Indian digital media cultures through the use of the mobile phone. Rai shows that despite being co-opted by capitalism to extract free creative labor from the workforce, jugaad is simultaneously a practice of everyday resistance, as workers and communities employ hacks to oppose corporate, caste, and gender power. Locating the tensions surrounding jugaad—as both premodern and postdigital, innovative and oppressive—Rai maps how jugaad can be used to undermine neoliberal capitalist media ecologies and nationalist politics.

Framing Finance

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

As the banking crisis and its effects on the world economy have made plain, the stock market is of colossal importance to our livelihoods. In Framing Finance, Alex Preda looks at the history of the market to figure out how we arrived at a point where investing is not only commonplace, but critical, as market fluctuations threaten our plans to send our children to college or retire comfortably. As Preda discovers through extensive research, the public was once much more skeptical. For investing to become accepted, a deep-seated prejudice against speculation had to be overcome, and Preda reveals that over the course of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries groups associated with stock exchanges in New York, London, and Paris managed to redefine finance as a scientific pursuit grounded in observational technology. But Preda also notes that as the financial data in which they trafficked became ever more difficult to understand, charismatic speculators emerged whose manipulations of the market undermined the benefits of widespread investment. And so, Framing Finance ends with an eye on the future, proposing a system of public financial education to counter the irrational elements that still animate the appeal of finance.

New Approaches To Ezra Pound

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Great advances are currently being made in the understanding of Pound's lifework. Many of the essays in this book--the majority are published her for the first time--disclose hitherto unsuspected aspects of the poet's beliefs, while others are studies in depth of areas of his work which, although frequently discussed, have never before been properly examined. Seldom, in fact, have so many pioneering studies been assembled between the covers of a single volume. The various contributors are eminently qualified to treat the specific ideas and interests of Pound's about which they write, and the book as a co-ordinated whole comprehensively covers his--and our artistic culture. Eminent scholars and critics from five different countries have come together in this attempt to 'unscrew the inscrutable': Richard EllemannLeslie FiedlerForrest ReadN. Christoph de NagyWalter BaumannGuy DavenportJ. P. SullivanJohn EspeyDonal DavieGeorge DekkerBoris de RachewiltzAlbert CookHugh KennerChristine Broke-Rose Eva Hesse--well-known here and in Germany as a critic and translator--establishes the interrelationships between the various fields of study and examines some of Pound's key concepts from the aspect of the history of ideas. New Approaches to Ezra Pound should serve as a valuable source book for all students of literature and may above all be expected to act as a catalyst for future studies.
