Literature And The Work Of Universality

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In an age of accelerating ecological crises, global inequalities and democratic fragility, it has become crucial to achieve renewed articulations of human commonality. With anchorage in critical theory as well as world literary studies, this volume approaches literature - and modes of literary thinking - as a key resource for such a task. "Universality" is understood here not as an established "universalism", but as a horizon towards which intellectual inquiry and literary practices orient themselves. In the field of world literature, there is by now a wide repertoire of epistemological resources through which claims to universality can be both questioned and reconfigured. If, at one end of the spectrum, world literature confronts us with the spectre of homogenisation and the commodification of difference under a regime of global capitalism, at another end renewed forms of philological, anthropological and ecological attentiveness to the particulars of languages and texts within the crucible of connected histories allow for defamiliarising perspectives both on received historical narratives and aesthetic practices. Vernacularity emerges here as a central point of reference for constructing the universal from within the particular, the idiomatic, and the experiences of social subordination or complicity.

BOOK EXCERPT:

The battle is going full force and nothing is being held back. Steven Boyd and the Blufirs are attacking with everything they have to defeat Pedro and his friends. Meanwhile, Pedro and his group are doing all they possibly can do to hold them back until reinforcements arrive. With the help of some of their allies, Pedro has been able to stay one step ahead of the enemy but time is quickly running out. With all the new weapons being used, no one can predict what is coming next. If something drastic doesn’t change and fast, it might be too late for anyone else to stop Steven Boyd and the Blufirs from taking over the Earth, destroying it, and eventually every other world, realm, and empire that exists as well. Pedro and his friends are well aware of the consequences if they fail to stop their enemy from advancing. With limited weapons they are forced to depend on their allies’ resources which have so far turned out to be odd but effective. Although Jim Davis is a royal pain in the rear, he has finally proved his worth as a valuable resource and gained everyone’s respect. However, David is the real star of the group. With his surprising knowledge, skills, and resources, he has allowed the others to take full advantage in their decision making and, so far, it has continued to keep them alive. Steven Boyd believes Pedro is some kind of a good luck charm that continues to allow the others to remain safely out of his grasp. With the assistance of a new acquaintance he meets, Steven Boyd decides to use black magic as a new weapon against Pedro and his friends. With deadly results, he attacks and it appears he might be winning the war. He should be happy but is surprised and horrified to discover that there will always be a price to pay for using black magic.

The End Of The World As You Know It

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Thinking about the end times isn't supposed to terrify you Christians rightly turn to the Bible to make sense of our times. But so often we get the wrong answers because we ask the wrong questions. In The End of the World as You Know It, Matthew L. Halsted challenges common end-times assumptions and points us back to Scripture. Each chapter reevaluates a popular question in light of the Bible's own concerns: Will Christians be raptured? What is the mark of the beast? When we let Scripture direct our questions, we get better—and more hopeful—answers. The Bible was written for us, but not to us. We must bridge the gap between Scripture's ancient context and our own. Reading end-times texts in their ancient context helps us understand our present and future. And when we do, we find that God's word brings peace, not fear and confusion.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book deals with World Class Operations Management (WCOM), detailing its principles, methods and organisation, and the results that this approach can bring about. Utilising real-world case studies illustrated by companies that have adopted this model (interviews with Saint-Gobain, L’Oréal, Tetra Pak, Bemis, and Bel Executives), it describes common patterns drawn from decades of hands-on experience, so as to present a theoretical approach together with the concrete application of its principles. WCOM, adopted by several multinational companies, is one of the more innovative management practises, as it integrates the best Continuous Improvement approaches (Lean, Total Productive Management, World Class Manufacturing) as well as the most innovative approaches in human dynamics like Change Leadership, Performance Behavior, Shingo Model, to name a few. Every book’s chapter has been authored by an expert in these different fields, thus revealing the synergy among the different practices, which is one of the distinguishing and successful aspects of WCOM Maximising reader insights into the successful implementation of such an approach, and explaining not only its potentialities, but also its implementation dynamics, the critical points and the ways it can be integrated into different situations, this book is also about how to create a culture of excellence that is sustainable over a long period of time and delivers consistent (or ever-improving) results.

Perception Beyond Inference

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Proposing a new paradigm for perceptual science that goes beyond standard information theory and digital computation. This book breaks with the conventional model of perception that views vision as a mere inference to an objective reality on the basis of "inverse optics." The authors offer the alternative view that perception is an expressive and awareness-generating process. Perception creates semantic information in such a way as to enable the observer to deal efficaciously with the chaotic and meaningless structure present at the physical boundary between the body and its surroundings. Vision is intentional by its very nature; visual qualities are essential and real, providing an aesthetic and meaningful interface to the structures of physics and the state of the brain. This view brings perception firmly in line with ethology and modern evolutionary biology and suggests new approaches in all disciplines that study, or require an understanding of, the ontology of mind. The book is the joint effort of a multidisciplinary group of authors. Topics covered include the relationships among stimuli, neuronal processes, and visual awareness. After considering the mind-dependent growing of information, the book treats time and dynamics; color, shape, and space; language and perception; perception, art, and design.

Imagining And The Transformation Of Man

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

If one is looking for answers to the meaning of life and how to make a happier, richer existence (e.g., relationships, finances, health), then Nevilles teaching from personal experience, testimonies from students, and his amazing visions paralleling and explaining the mysteries of the Old and New Testament will answer those questions. Learn his techniques, unleash your power to create, believe in your imaginary acts, and no power in this world can stop the desired results from appearing in your world. Its the only creative power, one that everyone is operating moment to moment. Learning how to direct it deliberately is essential to producing loving, positive changes in ones life. These 1963 lectures also begin a nine-year odyssey of discovering the deepest meanings of six visions of the end that had unfolded in Neville (19591963). The visions are the signs that this long journey as limited man; the terrible opacity and contraction is over, that the purpose of human life has been completed; man has endured and overcome six thousand years of amnesia plus the fires of experience and has emerged victorious. Hes been transformed by his inner being (I Am or God) back into the divinity he truly is and always was.
