Rise's career is unique in that it encompassed opera, recordings, radio, films, television, academic, and arts administration. She was a mainstay at the Metropolitan Opera for twenty-three seasons. In the 1940s she had her own radio show, she appeared in a classic film. In the 1950s she was a popular guest on television, her recordings sold in the thousands. The complete Carmen has been in print for over fifty years, the Mannes School of Music survived a bleak period in the 1960s because of her, the Metropolitan Opera National Company was launched under her aegis, she is now a managing director of the Metropolitan Opera. This biography will attempt to show in greater detail a career that extended from Brooklyn to Prague, from Canada to South America, from parts of America where a lied or aria had never been heard to the centers of culture, Paris and Milan. Stress has been recognized as an important factor in the development or recurrence of various mental disorders, from major depressive disorder to bipolar disorder to anxiety disorders. Stressful stimuli also appear to exert their effects by acting upon individuals with susceptible genotypes. Over the past 50 years, animal models have been developed to study these dynamic interactions between stressful stimuli and genetically susceptible individuals during prenatal and postnatal development and into adulthood. Stress and Mental Disorders: Insights from Animal Models begins with a discussion of the history of psychiatric diagnosis and the recent goal of moving toward precision psychiatry, followed by a review of clinical research on connections between stressful stimuli and the development of psychiatric disorders. Chapters are also included on neuroendocrine, immune, and brain systems involved in responses to stress. Additional chapters focus on the development of animal models in psychiatry and the susceptibility of the developing organism to stressful stimuli. Subsequent chapters are devoted to animal models of specific stress-sensitive psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. These chapters also focus on identification of promising molecular targets for development of new drug therapies. The section concludes with a chapter on animal models of resilience to stress-induced behavioral alterations as a newer approach to understanding why some animals are susceptible to stress and others are resilient, even though they are essentially genetically identical. The final chapter discusses how these basic laboratory studies are providing promising leads for future breakthroughs in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders.

Laron Syndrome (LS) is a disease characterized by resistance to growth hormone (GH) and caused by molecular defects of the GH receptor, leading to a deficiency of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and a significant impairment of growth. The syndrome is a unique human model of a peptide hormone receptor defect and GH-IGF-1 interaction. It offers the opportunity to study the consequences of long-term IGF-1 deficiency and the role of IGF-1 in growth and metabolism. With the recent biosynthesis of IGF-1 and the initiation of IGF-1 therapy, a whole new world of basic biological interactions is opening up. This volume brings together leading researchers in genetics, endocrinology, pediatrics, biochemistry, physiology and pharmacology to summarize what is now known about LS, and to discuss the lessons learned from studying and treating this disease since its initial description in 1966. It is rare to find an author or editor who does not believe that his/her book fills a very specific need. This editor is no exception. With the incredible proliferation of medical textbooks in recent years, it has become difficult to find an empty niche for yet another text. Nevertheless, the editors and authors of Principles of Medical Therapy in Pregnancy have been impressed by one very clearly appreciated void: While the association of medical disorders with pregnancy is increasing in frequency as improved medical care allows more patients with medical diseases to conceive, an authoritative text covering the issue, comparable to an authoritative text in internal medicine, has been missing. With pregnancy representing a very specific disease situation-different from the nonpregnant state in diagnosis, management, and course of disease-a detailed textbook addressing all these issues for both the internist and the obstetrician seemed urgently needed.
