Neurobiology Of Disease

BOOK EXCERPT:

The study of the mechanisms by which diseases alter the function of the nervous system was once well described as "Neurological Pathophysiology," the title of previous editions of this book. But when disciplines as diverse as molecular genetics and radiation biophysics converge on the analysis of the nervous system and its disorders, a title with broader meaning is required to encompass them. The change in the book's title reflects a change in its scope, as it includes much more information on functional and anatomical systems than the early editions. New to this fourth edition are three chapters on Memory, Genetic Disorders, and Brain Tumors. Infections are given more extensive treatment, the original chapter being divided into two, the first on bacteria, fungi and parasites, the second on viruses. All other chapters have been updated. For medical students and physicians the text offers and introduction to the scientific basis of clinical neurology--the framework on which diagnosis and treatment are based. For graduate students and scientists in the field of neurobiology, it describes the expression of fundamental mechanisms gone awry, and provides clues for elucidating those mechanisms.

The Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry, Second Edition, previously called Psychiatry in the Elderly, is an updated and revised version of this popular and highly respected textbook. The book has established itself as the standard textbook in its field due to its unique combination of comprehensive coverage, clear writing, and authoritative and up-to-date information. This new edition maintains these strengths, with chapters covering the basic sciences underpinning old age psychiatry, clinical practice, psychiatric services for older people, specific disorders, and medico-legal and ethical issues. This new updated edition involves 96 contributors from around the world bringing a truly global perspective to the textbook, and highlighting both the common burdens and the differences in management from country to country. New chapters have been included to reflect the development of old age care, covering palliative care, ethics of caring, and living and dying with dementia. Chapters have been revised and updated throughout with expanded chapters including those on brain stimulation therapies, memory clinics and services, and capacity, which has been extended to include all mental capacity and decision making. Broad in its coverage, written by experts in their fields, and maintaining a clear structure throughout, the new second edition of the Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry is the essential reference for all old age psychiatrists as well as all those interested in the mental health care of older people.

The Neurobiology Of Brain And Behavioral Development

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Neurobiology of Brain and Behavioral Development provides an overview of the process of brain development, including recent discoveries on how the brain develops. This book collates and integrates these findings, weaving the latest information with core information on the neurobiology of brain development. It focuses on cortical development, but also features discussions on how the other parts of the brain wire into the developing cerebral cortex. A systems approach is used to describe the anatomical underpinnings of behavioral development, connecting anatomical and molecular features of brain development with behavioral development. The disruptors of typical brain development are discussed in appropriate sections, as is the science of epigenetics that presents a novel and instructive approach on how experiences, both individual and intergenerational, can alter features of brain development. What distinguishes this book from others in the field is its focus on both molecular mechanisms and behavioral outcomes. This body of knowledge contributes to our understanding of the fundamentals of brain plasticity and metaplasticity, both of which are also showcased in this book. - Provides an up-to-date overview of the process of brain development that is suitable for use as a university textbook at an early graduate or senior undergraduate level - Breadth from molecular level (Chapters 5-7) to the behavioral/cognitive level (Chapters 8-12), beginning with Chapters 1-4 providing a historical context of the ideas - Integrates the neurobiology of brain development and behavior, promoting the idea that animal models inform human development - Presents an emphasis on the role of epigenetics and brain plasticity in brain development and behavior

The Neurology Of Neuroblastoma

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Neuroblastoma is the single most common solid tumor of childhood. Although children with small primary neuroblastomas alone are almost always cured by surgery, 65% of children with neuroblastoma already have large bulky tumors or metastatic disease by the time of initial diagnosis. For these children, the 5-year survival rate is only somewhere between 5% and 20% with therapies including surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplantation. Dr Schor outlines a new approach to these tumors in order to make a difference for these children. There is much information to support the notion that neuroblastomas represent a developmental aberration of the nervous system, rather than a de novo abnormality in a previously normal cell. While the remote, paraneoplastic effects of neuroblastoma are often the purview of the child neurologist, the neoplasm itself has been viewed and approached therapeutically in much the same manner as all other solid tumors, as the purview of the pediatric oncologist. This work takes the view that approaching neuroblastoma rather as a disorder of nervous system development offers new therapeutic possibilities for this common tumor of childhood.
