BOOK EXCERPT:
Just two years after rowing solo across the North Atlantic at the age of twenty-five, Maud Fontenoy was ready for a new challenge—crossing the Pacific Ocean. Leaving from Lima, Peru, and traveling 4,400 miles in seventy-three days, Fontenoy landed in Hiva Oa in French Polynesia, becoming the first woman to complete what is known as the “Kon-Tiki” route. Alone at sea for days and nights on end, Fontenoy’s story relates the ups and downs of her time at sea, from circling sharks to the celebrity welcome upon her journey’s end. Named one of Time Magazine International’s thirty most important people of 2005, Fontenoy presents the reader with a terrific, entertaining adventure story on the high seas as she faces the Pacific Ocean. Fontenoy overcame the odds as well as her personal doubts and fears, demonstrating not only her indomitable courage and strength, but proving once again that women can conquer the most difficult and treacherous obstacles.

BOOK EXCERPT:
As the cold war ends, the United States is being forced to reassess the dominant role it has played in East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific during the decades that followed World War II. Bringing readers up to date on policy trends in the area, the author provides a general overview as well as detailed analyses of key issues in individual nations and regions. The author concludes by placing these regional developments in the context of the ongoing debate in the United States over an appropriate foreign policy in the post-cold war world.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The combination of fiscal constraints, expanding technology and globalization is causing the nature of warfare to rapidly evolve. The wars of tomorrow will not look like today’s war. The ability to adapt to changing warfare environments hinges on a leader’s ability to think broadly and view the operation through the lens of the entire conflict. This paper analyzes how Admiral Raymond A. Spruance prepared for the challenge of conducting amphibious assaults in the Central Pacific during World War II. Further, the paper uses Admiral Spruance’s development as an operational thinker as a case study for today’s leaders to prepare for the challenge of adapting to future operational environments. Admiral Spruance’s operational education, operational training and experiential base is discussed and recommendations are provided to help today’s leaders prepare for tomorrow’s battles.

Estimates of the age composition of the commercial landings of Pacific sardine (Sardinops caerulea) at Monterey and San Pedro, for the seasons 1938-39, 1939-40, and 1940-41 are given. A mode-subtraction method was used to make the season of 1938-39 estimates and its accuracy is discussed. Estimates for the other seasons were obtained by applying the age data collected during those seasons. All known age-composition data for the Pacific sardine for the seasons 1932-33 through 1959-60 are presented. Estimates of year-class size in numbers of fish are given by season and port of landing. An annotated bibliography of papers containing basic age and length data on the Pacific sardine is included.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Long before the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants brought the major leagues to California in 1958, professional baseball thrived on the West Coast in the form of the Pacific Coast League (PCL). Minor only in name, the league featured intense rivalries, a huge fan base, and such future Hall of Famers as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams. The Los Angeles Angels won 14 PCL pennants and stood as the league's premier franchise. This year-by-year chronicle of the Los Angeles Angels from 1903 to 1957 includes an overview of the PCL and a wealth of statistical information, including an all-time player roster, a list of important team records, lineups, and attendance information. Based in part on personal interviews with former Angels players, this history offers a nostalgic look back at the PCL and the early days of baseball in the West.
