The combination of fiscal constraints, expanding technology and globalization is causing the nature of warfare to rapidly evolve. The wars of tomorrow will not look like today’s war. The ability to adapt to changing warfare environments hinges on a leader’s ability to think broadly and view the operation through the lens of the entire conflict. This paper analyzes how Admiral Raymond A. Spruance prepared for the challenge of conducting amphibious assaults in the Central Pacific during World War II. Further, the paper uses Admiral Spruance’s development as an operational thinker as a case study for today’s leaders to prepare for the challenge of adapting to future operational environments. Admiral Spruance’s operational education, operational training and experiential base is discussed and recommendations are provided to help today’s leaders prepare for tomorrow’s battles.

Estimates of the age composition of the commercial landings of Pacific sardine (Sardinops caerulea) at Monterey and San Pedro, for the seasons 1938-39, 1939-40, and 1940-41 are given. A mode-subtraction method was used to make the season of 1938-39 estimates and its accuracy is discussed. Estimates for the other seasons were obtained by applying the age data collected during those seasons. All known age-composition data for the Pacific sardine for the seasons 1932-33 through 1959-60 are presented. Estimates of year-class size in numbers of fish are given by season and port of landing. An annotated bibliography of papers containing basic age and length data on the Pacific sardine is included.

Long before the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants brought the major leagues to California in 1958, professional baseball thrived on the West Coast in the form of the Pacific Coast League (PCL). Minor only in name, the league featured intense rivalries, a huge fan base, and such future Hall of Famers as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams.
